I know why they started putting holes in Lifesavers and other mints. It was so that if a child swallowed one they would be able to get air.
Today, I think holes in mints are more of a habit because it has been done before.

Because they sell well!

Saves money for the manufacturer

Do you remember a few years ago they sold the holes as a special promotion (they were sweets, not just air)

If they didn't have the hole they would be a lot smaller, and might not sell as much.
