What law does MA have where people can not get insurance outside of the state?

I mean like Progessive, Geico, Statefarm, That is all I can think of right now. What is with that?

Mass has a no fault law, and there are only a few companies that write policies in that state. The also have some strange rules and regulations. Your insurance is not valid until you have the paperwork processed at the Registry of motor vehicles. Dealers do not issue temporary tags. If you buy a car in Mass, you have to pay for it, physically go to your insurance agent and get the paperwork to register the car, and take that to the dealer. The dealer then takes the paperwor to the RMV, (usually the next business day) and you can then pick up your car.

A Mass resident who is out of state and buys a car can not have their Mass insurance coverage until they return to the state and do the paperwork. I had a couple that was traveling, and had a catastrophic failure in the motor of their car. Rather than have the car fixed, they wanted to buy a new car, to continue on their trip. They were financially able to do so, and I can issue a 60 day temporary tag when I sell a car, so it should have been simple. They could not get the car insured from their agent.

I had to take them to a local agent here, who wrote them a 60 day policy so that they were covered until they got home!

Believe me it's less difficult and smoother handling the federal government .
