In the U.S. (at least), I'm pretty sure that "sanctuary" is not a legal right or law.
In the rare cases where police haven't immediately pursued someone into a church, it's probably out of a desire to defuse and issue, or out of respect for clergy asking for time.

Back in the days when one was immediately taken outside and hanged the need for sanctuary was very real but, today with our justice system the jail awaiting trial would be a much nicer and comfortable place. I am sure people would rather wait an investigation and trial out someplace other than a Church, especially because there is no television in Church.

Sanctuary in a Church, you wouldn't get away with in the Valleys of Wales, sadly there was a case sometime in 2006: In The South of lreland.... What Ireland should have done was put the ******* on a C-17 out of lreland that way there be more homes for its own.... let alone for outsiders... after all when the U.K Troops moved into N lreland, What happened ops yes I recall get the **** out we don't want you here was the call from the IRA ... Many U.K troops infact was killed over a number of years.... Sanctuary my backside. go cry where you belong. In hell not inside a Church.

I think this is an outdated way of thinking. centuries ago, the one jumping into a church or other sanctuary, had an opponent that believed in the force of that building/place as well. Now, people have nothing against walking into a church with a gun....

I am not sure. I have not heard about this, at least in the United States. Maybe that's a good thing, however, and it still happens. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Traditionally it was the case but in reality the law has no respect for archaic traditions.
