i have a little neutered pomeranian. he is about 4 years old. if i do not take him out for a walk every day (where he marks everything he can find) he marks a chair in my house! (and it is winter now and very cold where i live so i will not be walking with him much for awhile) what can i do to get him to stop? also how do i clean things so the scent is gone so he does not do it again? thank you.

I am going to assume that you do let the little guy out routinely to do his business in your yard, that you don't expect him to hold it indefinetely! :-)

There are two products I recommend highly that remove the scent of the urine to the dog's nose. Simple Solution and Nature's Miracle. Both are readily available at pet supply stores or on-line. You simply spray/wipe the liquid on the area(s) the dog has marked after wiping the actual urine off with a damp cloth.

Also, marking is not like normal housebreaking. In a dog who is not housebroken, unless you catch the dog in the act of relieving themselves, you cannot scold. In dogs who mark, though, this is a dog saying, "I was here, this is mine!" In these cases, it is correct to scold at a later time, when you find the mess.

What I have found successful in the past with my own dogs is to, after finding the mess, first gather the cleaning supplies next to the marked item. Then go and gather your dog and bring him to the spot (don't call for a come, bring the dog there by the collar). Firmly scold him, pointing at the spot. Then put the dog in temporary isolation, either outside or lock him in the bathroom or some other place he isn't really happy to be in.

Clean the spot, wipe/spray it with the cleaning solution. Then get a sock you have recently worn and place it on the spot. This is you telling the dog that you are claiming the spot as yours. Bring the dog back out of isolation and return him to the spot. In a firm tone, tell him, "MINE!". Then walk away. Leave the sock for several hours.

Marking is a symptom of a dog with dominance issues, though. You might want to address other areas of his life that will also aid in him not feeling the need to mark. Look into NILIF (nothing in life is free) and alpha training for your boy. Contact a trainer or a behaviorist in your area for more one-on-one information.

Get rid of the chair. There is nothing on the market that will remove a scent enough to fool a dog. If he is only "marking" the chair, then the problem is solved. Also you need to follow him around and discipline him when or if he "marks" something else. You can purchase a pee mat at pet stores so that when you catch him going, put him on the pee mat. He will associate the mat with going to the bathroom. (for when you can't take him outside). I think there is a spray product out that's called "Urine-b-gone" for any places that have been "marked". Good luck.

My wife and I have a Pom too. Basically, you can go to any pet store and by this spray that will deter him from marking. If that doesn't work then sell him LOL. Just kiddin. The best thing to do is to go to a good pet store. They sell stuff for that.

s' quite confusing. IF YOU don't take him out everyday? What do you expect him to do use a litter box?
