Well, conscience is defined as a sense of right and wrong and that hardly came from God. That came from humanity's learning things the hard way in the course of time that certain behaviors were harmful to one another. Therefore, we learned to feel "bad" about when we harmed one another, both intentionally and accidentally.

Far as the soul is concerned, one need only look at the definition to explain why science "can't" explain it.

Soul: n, from Old English sawol. 1. an entity without material reality, regarded as the spiritual part of a person. 2. the moral or emotional nature of a person. 3. spiritual or emotional warmth, force, etc. 4. a vital or essential part, quality, etc. 5. a person [the rest of the definitions are about the music type known as Soul]

The soul is immaterial, invisible, incorporeal. There's nothing solid about the soul to even prove it exists, let alone who "created" it. Far as I'm concerned, if the soul DOES exist, science hasn't developed the technology to detect and study it just yet, but it eventually will. And I'm fairly sure what we consider the "soul" will amount to be electromagnetic fields as people are electric creatures.

If we didn't produce bioelectricity, there wouldn't be EKG readings for the heart and EEGs for the brain. So if we have a soul, it's quite likely electromagnetic energy and fields. No creator involved. Just nature.

First of all, there is no such thing as a "soul." The soul is an idea man has invented to attempt to cope with the knowledge of our finite existence. One cannot imagine nothingness because our only frame of reference is consciousness. It seems then quite logical to believe that there can be no nothingness at the end of life, however that is not true. Death is the end of life, an end of all consciousness... nothingness. As for the conscience, I'm inclined to accept it as an evolutionary adaptation that helps us in our survival. Can you imagine how many people would be running around killing everyone in sight if they didn't ever feel bad about it?

What you are using here is the classic "god of the gaps" argument. You find a gap in scientific knowledge and you cram your god in there to try and solve the problem. I have a better answer, it goes something like this... "i don't know, perhaps some day we will find out." It's that simple... are you really so desperate to find answers about everything in your world that you are willing to invent an answer for certain problems so you don't have to work for the correct answer? I'm much more content to understand that there is allot we don't know about the world. Try it out.

Simply put...man.

The things you listed are human conepts. The soul was "created" in order to give credence to a higher being, by claiming a heavenly reward for following the tenants of a particular faith.

Conscience is the by-product of the introduction of right and wrong. In different cultures, with different standards of right and wrong (anything from cannabalistic primitive tribes to the "yuppie culture"), different things may or may not make one feel guilty.

So, religion and god is the creation of man.
Why are you fighting that?

The soul is a very controversial term because it's usually a projection of people's self without a body -- something we don't know exists or not. In terms of consciouness, I don't know who or what created it. If God created it, why did he create it so vulnerable (along with the rest of the body)? If someone gets a head injury or Alzheimers, consciousness is severely diminished (or goes away entirely). Lots of questions that we don't have answers to.

Geeeez! I'm not even Athiest, but this bible, religion sh*t is starting to get on my nerves. Are you really that arrogant to belive that you are 100% correct in your beliefs? No one can be that sure. You believe what you want to believe, and others have the right to do so as well. That does not mean you need to spend your time trying to convince anyone otherwise. Religion or lack of religion is personal. Its between them and god (or not). You need to respect that people are different and have different beliefs. Its okay. You're not going to go to hell because someone else doesn't believe hell exists. Why don't you go read the bible or say a prayer for them. Wouldn't that do more good anyway?

Because I don't believe there is a soul and the mind, self-awareness, and consciousness are nothing more than emergent behaviors of the brain, just as running a program is ultimately nothing more than an emergent behavior of the hardware, presuming the program was created with genetic algorithms.

There is no such thing as a soul, and the conscience is a product of evolution.

2006-10-30 15:18:51 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 3 0

Well, none of us have a "soul" and our "conscience" is just a social adaptation. No god required.

man, you dumb...

The soul is nothing more than a concept like peace or harmony. It was created by man to render our consciousness immortal. It is like a loophole to death.
