she's an Eclectus parrot & isn't plucking her feathers out but they do appear to be split/shreaded. Does anyone know what this could be?

Hi!
Sounds like one of 2 things. I think you have an issue with diet. Make sure she has a ton of veggies. This should be the mainstay of her diet. Then back this up with a cooked bean mix for protein. This will eventually help. If you decide to feed 'Harrison's", an EXCELLENT pellet, make sure you refrigerate it after opening the bag. It has no preservatives.
Eclectus feathers are so "tight", it appears that they have fur rather than feathers. Sounds like she's having a tough time "zipping" them up when she preens. Have you given her a shower lately? You might want to start there. This might give you immediate positive results. If you are still having issues, please don't hesitate to email me. I would me more than happy to assist.

Eclectus are kind of notorious for bad feather condition. If she truly is not chewing her feathers then this could be any number of diet or parasite related problems.

I would be certain to move her onto a pelleted diet of Harrison's (first choice) or Roudybush (second best) as soon as you can supplement with fresh fruits and veggies in small quantities.

Seed is insufficient for the health of Eclectuc parrots.

If the feather condition does not improve, get to the vet for advice. Or better yet, go before switching. It could be a fungus or parasite that is easily dealt with. It could be that a blood screening would point to other problems that should be addressed.

I have a male Eclectus. Could be she is getting ready to lose those feathers. Sometimes mine gets a few scruffy feathers ,but they don't last long. Make sure you are feeding her a complete diet-we give ours parrot seed,
parrot nutri berries, fresh fruit AND a pasta & veg type
toddler in the plastic container once a day-he loves them!
beef & tomato ravioli is his favorite! And make sure she has bathing water. Arn't they the sweetest birds!

It is very possible it could be her diet. Does she have lots of toys to play with? They will get bored. Make sure she's has a good diet.
