I find this practice very inconsiderate, especially when your trying to have a conversation, and some clown on the other side of the café your in, is drowning out everything someone says.

I think the novelty of Cell Phones still hasn't worn off yet. People find them to be status symbols and they feel Important when they are getting a call but some people are just more animated when they speak so they may be that way on their phone at home and you just have never seen it outside the home until now. until about ten years ago phones outside the home were much rarer. It was more the beeper thing. Now with everyone having a cellular phone we start to see people doing something they only used to do in phone booths or at home. also it's small and some are hands free so you tend to gesture more like when your talking to a person.

Very annoying, people can't go anywhere these days without a phone glued to their ear. And the worst thing is that I think they want people to listen. people fight and show off while on their cell phones. I work in a clothing store and this lady came and after checking out she just stood there, called someone and proceed to have a loud conversation about that shes going to Spain next week and Germany etc and just bragging on the phone. Like I really want to hear her conversation. Why didn't she just leave instead of annoying people?

Related to reason people talk loud when listening to headphones, the context of what they are hearing is adjusting their own volume level.

They are having a hard time hearing the person on the other end of the phone because of the poor cell phone speaking quality and because of ambient noise. Their brains tell them, "you are having a hard time hearing them, so you must speak up for them to hear you."

I think they are often showing off. I saw a man go into the middle of a large group of people and very loudly start talking about his yacht, his expensive rugs and furniture and his multi million $ deals. The people tried to move away but, he followed. I'll bet anything his phone wasn't even on. lol!

I think talking on your cell phone in line or something like that is very rude. I hate it when I am trying to ring someone up and they are just talking away on their phone. I try not to use my phone in public out of courtesy.

People have this fascination deep within to be the center of attention, even if they don't admit it to their own self. We all seek to get the attention of the others. that's why some people kill celebrities for example, not for the pleasure of it, but for the perverted fascination of being on the news, of being out of the common, of being the center of attention instead of being the one looking at the others and admiring them.
given this, there are of course several levels to that obscession, if i may call it this way. But one thing for sure, we all have it within us, we all seek to be admired, to be appreciated and thanked by others, that's why many people love to be super heroes, so that the world can look at them and say: waw, X is magnificient.

to simplify things, let me turn to the question, people speak loud in the bus not just because they ar einconsiderate fools, but also because they seek the others in the bus to listen to them, to hear what they say, regardless of how useless and unintellectual their discussion is.

Some people don't grasp the whole 'mobile phone' thing and think they still have to shout to be heard. Either that or they're the 'look at me!' kind of person!

They can't hear well, and forget they are speaking to the world, not the person on the phone.

Because the person on the other end of the line is so far away YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN HEAR YOU!

I agree totally. They're ignorant, and in some cases I find it necessary to move away from them.
