i dont speak hindi, but i speak telugu which is another indian language, and i dont really prefer speaking either one because even though english is easier, i am more comfortable and can convey my thoughts better in telugu, the language is just cool. so i am not against having english as an official language, i mean i speak it fluently, but that doesn't mean that i want it to be my main language either.

Hey Buddy,
Just To Let You Know I Am Indian, and I have been living all my life outside India, & I Have Never Felt It Necessary To Speak In English With My Hindi Speaking Friends. Infact When I Go Down To India I See A Lot Of People Trying To Talk To Me In English, Inspite Of Being Well - Versed With Hindi. As Far As Hindi Being The Official Language Of India, Its The Best Idea, Cause India Is Well Known For Its Cultural Diversity, And Is Imnumerous No:Of Regional Languages. I Think The Only Thing That Binds/ Unifies All Indians Is Our National Language - Hindi.

India at the time of separation and independence was like 1000 countries( Kingdoms).
English then was the official language and it still has more people with mother tongue English, then in some of the smaller English speaking countries.
So it is natural that it has 26 official languages in which you can approach the government of India.
This 26 languages were used as state languages by different state or provinces of India.
Do Indians prefer English to Hindi?
I cannot answer this above question but I can assure you that if the central government of India initially not promoted Hindi, then official language would have remain English by usage.
Even today people in all big cities and big villages can get by on English for most part, any where in India.

Natives of any country use their mother-tongue in day-to-day conversation; so do Indians. Since Hindi is a widely spoken and understood language in most part of the country, it is natural that people prefer to converse in Hindi.
On the other hand, English is used as a link-language amongst people of different ethnic groups who do not find it easy to converse in Hindi. English is also used in some official communications and for higher education etc. Since English is an international language, we cannot simply do without it. However, it cannot be our official language because of the fact that it is a foreign language and we must have our own identity.

This question is not so simple as it sounds. Each state in India has it's own language and each region of the state has its own dialects of the state language. Though hindi is a"national language" of india, its not accepted by most part of south india, they would prefer to speak english over hindi and most of them dont even know hindi. As per north indians, its mixed. depending on the culture and society they come from.

As an Indian brought up in Mumbai & studied in an convent school I think , live & breathe in English. My greatest bugbear whilst in school was Hindi & Marathi. I couldn't wait to get in college so that I would be rid of these languages. Funny thing is my 2 kids also have similar experiences. They are not at all comfortable with any Indian language. My native tongue is Kannada & my husbands is Malyalam. Unless you make a 'concious' effort to 'learn' these other myriad Indian languages what you end up speaking & thinking in is ........English (atleast from my personal experience)

Most unfortunately the coommon language of india which was sanskrit has been kicked out and Hindi adialect of sanskrit is intoduced as official language of india. Hindi is spoken in most of the northern states viz rajasthan, delhi, uttaranchal, uttar pradesh, and Bihar and madhya pradesh(including chhatisgarh). The other states have other languages.
All people prefer their own languages to communicate to each other. One foreign language helps to communicate with people out side India. since a vast number of people in the world know english and because India has the infrastructure to teach English it has continued. No scientist has time to translate all the scientific research and publications in local language.
so there is no option except English. we can use our languages to communicate with each other. But when you get technical you have to find another language.

It is always easier to speak english ,but i prefer to speak both of mine. English outside the home and german at home. If you only speak hindi than I could not talk to you ! I do like other languages too , and it's interresting how some of them sound

Hindi is preferable but since the thrust now is towards globalization, it is good to be well versed in English too. Hindi could not be understood by people in other parts of the globe.
