Of course it is - the topic is mainly being used as an excuse to increase taxes.
Think of it this way:
Many people like to consider global warming being due to the emission of Carbon Dioxide.
Mankinds annual emission of Carbon Dioxide is less than ten percent of global emission due to natural causes, like volcanic eruptions et al.
The fitting of catalytic converters to road vehicles INCREASES their Co2 output, as well as emitting other heavy metal particles.
If the total emission of the UK was suddenly stopped, China would account for the reduction within 89 days
The main point that governments seem to be missing is that the re-absorbsion of Co2 is severely reduced planet wide due to the massive defoliation of the rain forests - a point raised over thirty years ago.
I would point out that the air appears far cleaner now than it ever did fourty years ago, no more smogs or fogs, I can remember storms in the sixties being just as bad as they are today, if not worse.
Last point - control the emission at source - the power stations - and go nuclear.
The all electric house emits very little Co2.

ok... .questions about this issue are ok, but you seem to be furthering a particular argument... So there's an obvious question i'd like to pose to you.,,
What is the agenda or conspiracy?
To what end are the London nobs who are greeny hippy types doing this?
To con all you non london non hippy yobs into buying bikes? they cunningly have shares in Raleigh i guess.
No, In my opinion the conspiracy is in the number of scientists who try to DENY the existance of global warming. On the round the world trip I'm sure you spent some time in some of the countries/regions that will be worst affected by the rising sea levels. If The greenland ice melts much of South east asia will be particularly affected.
So you didn't see it in the US. No surprises there... Don't use this as a reason to ignore the reality of global warming...

You are fortunate to have the BBC. In the US, giant corporations own the media and, it seems, the Congress. If I was a Brit., I'd be mad at the countries that pay no heed to the coming crisis. It's getting hard to find anyone who doesn't think that the climate is being altered by man in a big way, that is if you don't count the people that work for the fossil fuel industry! Maybe you didn't hear about it in your travels because you were in places more concerned with just having a decent living?

450 MILLION automobiles were reported to be used daily in 2001. That was 6 years ago and that does not include commerical vehicles (buses, 18 wheelers etc). Factor in the number of factories and power plants polluting the skies. Consider the continued harvesting of trees and deforestation in 3rd world countries.
FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY...MILLION cars. It took one asteroid to kill off the dinosaurs. You don't think a half a billion cars chugging out carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide every single day for the last 30 years and the next 30 years isn't enough to change the climate of this very modestly sized planet?
The earth is not in danger. We are. Once we are gone, the earth will recover quite nicely i'm sure.

even if global warming is indeed just part of a natural cycle, previous similar heat waves have caused large shifts in areas inhabitable by humans.
If Antarctica and Greenland melt, will we build dikes around every lowland area? Or will we kiss good-bye to the Netherlands, Florida, Bangladesh, many islands, and many coastal lands and cities?
Will we all welcome these new refugees into our homes?
If it is preventable, let's try to prevent it. THere's no harm in trying, is there?

Hi. The Earth does not need your permission to respond to the laws of physics. Climate change will be denied by those it will inconvenience until even the hold out say "I didn't know it would be so bad!"

Global warming has become a political issue and very few people even understand what it is about, or care, least of all the politicians.
