Is MSG a flavoring product that is in all foods? Also, where typically can you find the MSG, for example is it in the powder package of top ramen? Do they have to tell you if there is MSG in the food? thanks

The FDA passed MSG (Monosodium glutamate) as a GRAS (generally recognized as safe) category in the 50's. This means they don't have to list this as an ingredient in the US. But, due to the high reaction rate people had (about 50%) they have now altered the rule. Presently, ALL food providers are REQUIRED to list MSG if there is any present as an additive to the food.

Also, it is sold as Ac'cent in the US in the spice aisle.

Yes, MSG should be listed in a product ingredient list.

You can buy it in bulk from most wholesale food purveyors.

For the home cook, it is sold as "Fruit Fresh."

It is NOT present in all foods unless it's added. It is a flavor enhancer and preservative.
