great question, it's because we want to be taken seriously and respected. my ultimate goal is to get married and have children but I don't want to be seen as the domesticated traditional housewife that is expected to cook and clean and serve my husband. I believe in equality and mutual respect in a marriage and people don't get that impression out of a traditional wife role.

Women can be just afraid of a ball and chain as men can be. It's a stereotype or over generalization to think that most women want to be married and have children. Many now a days don't want the burden of children or to become the little woman.

well, 1) you tell a guy you want commitment...until death do us part, children, house w/ white picket fence. What will most guys do...RUN!!! and 2) Not all girls do want that. In fact, Most girls these days don't want that studies show that 60% of women from 19-35 would rather have a career 1st and 30% of women don't care if they get married or not. So maybe your just a sexist man who is afraid that he wants to live in the 50's and he hasn't met a women to fullfill his need. Get over your manliness and step into 2006.

women are afraid of being hurt, just like men. personally, i sometimes have a hard time reveling my true feelings or emotions because someone may find them silly. I don't want to be looked down upon. Also, we all in some way, create an appearance or have a way we like others to perceive us. as a result, we hold back responses and emotions that do not fit with the images we present to others.

Because they really need to know the guy and feel comfortable to let their plans for future life be shown .. they also don't want to scare the guy off! and maybe these women you talk to don't want these things .. most women would probably admit what they want out of life

Maybe they are afraid because when you first meet a man, saying your goal is to be married with children could send them running the other way.

talking is easy but the "strings attached" is what keeping women back off. men can pack up & leave everything behind without a worry but women are more responsible with the kids, making a home, keeping everybody together, hold on to their job, etc....

it seems women are caught between wanting so called "traditional things," and being chastised for not having a "career." I believe that is why women are hesitant to admit that they want to be married and have children.

It's the fear of failure. Fear of failure is what keeps most people from pursuing their dreams... whether it's a prestigious career or settling down to have a family. Have you seen the t.v. show "Nanny 911"? Raising healthy, well-adjusted children is not a piece of cake!!

How do you know what most women want ? Have you polled them all ? I dont want kids. If they back down when you bring it up its probably because they dont want the same thing you do.
