I asked my allergist that because cigarette smoke makes it extremely hard for me to breath and it makes me nausious.
He said there is no allergy to cigarette smoke, but it is classified as an "irritant".
Either way, some people don't like it and they have legitimate reasons.....not what you wanted to hear, but true

I have heard people say that they are allergic to cigarette smoke, and even cigar smoke. I do not know if this is an actual "allergy", but I can tell you, my own personal experience. I personally have never smoked. I came from a Family of non-smokers. I never lived with any smokers. But in the past 10 years, some of my friends have smoked. I had two severe cases of bronchitis, when I was 12. Since then, I have been able to be active, but my bronchial tubes are scarred. I love to go camping and go to the beach. I can sit by a bonfire or campfire for hours, sleep well, and be fine and frisky in the morning. If I spend a couple of hours in a place, such as a house, restaurant, dance club, etc., with any sigarette smoke, my throat is dry and scratchy, My eyes burn and itch. My nasal passages dry out to the point of painful discomfort. And I am coughing, and sometimes sneezing. It is much worse if people are at my table, and are smoking. Even if they blow the smoke the other direction. It can last for days. I don't know if it is an actual allergy, but the symptoms ARE real. Also there are different elements in different kinds of smoke. Some quite toxic. This is known to be true by just thinking about house fires. When some types of plastics burn, they can release fatal toxins. This can kill you faster than smoke inhalation, from the house burning itself. So it is a fact that different smoke sources, can cause different hazards in the air. I personally believe cigarette smoke, to be one of them.

People say they are allergic to smoke because for many non-smokers... the smoke will cause the same exact symptoms of any other known allergy. ie: coughing, sneezing, sore throat, watery eyes, etc. Also, people w/ asthma are more likely to have a "reaction" to cigarette smoke.
Regarding the fireplace smoke ... burning a log of wood is all natural... whereas burning a cigarette contains many chemicals... so yes - there is quite a difference between the two.

um, i dont know if it has ever been diagnosed.... but my mom has a terrible time breathing in anywhere that is smokey, she never claims it as an allergy (and she is a nurse, so i would think she would have knowledge of such things), but if people can be allergic to sunlight, why not cig smoke? (maybe thats a crappy comparison LOL) all i know is that i am a smoker and i try not to smoke around non smokers out of courtesy...

I AM allergic to it. My doctor took my blood and told me that I am allergic. My mother smokes and as a child, I developed a severe bronchial disease and the doctor made her quit smoking around me and it went away. Every time I am around cigarette smoke my nose burns and my chest starts hurting and I can't breathe. There are plenty of people who just don't like being around smoke and I am one of them . I do not care to smell like a nasty ash tray. I think smoking is nasty and is one of the most foul habits that a person can have. I am extremely happy that the city I live in has banned it from restaurants, now I can enjoy my food without smelling that nasty crap. But I do not use my allergy as an excuse, I just kindly ask someone not to smoke.

I have diagnosed allergy's to it...it gives me asthma attacks and I end up in the E.R. (yes I take my inhaler) I have trouble with ANY smoke (fireplaces, etc.) It's more common to see Cig. smoke. I really didn't care if someone smoked, but now I can't breath....
Asthma is serous. Not just oh it makes my breathing funny...it makes breathing impossible

Some people are allergic to all types of smoke, cigarette or otherwise. My little brother is so badly allergic to smoke that my dad (a 20 year smoker) had to quit.

Don't punish him, u guys got in a bit of a fuss. I'm a smoker and hey, guess what? You can buy another :D. Don't make him your little slave by lighting your cigarettes for a month, that isn't really an equal relationship.

Well, I've witnessed a person pass out shortly after someone blew a huge puff of cigarette smoke in her face. She had to be taken to the hospital. It is possible but not usually that severe. her case is pretty rare.

I know what you're saying. I think people say that because if they offer a "medical" reason, it makes their complain more legitimate. I smoked for a long time, but quit several years ago and smoke now bothers me when I'm out, but it isn't an allergy. I think that;s bull, but I am sure people will disagree with me.
