I was driving this morning to the post office & none of my engine lights were on & it just starting backfiring & stalling out continously....What could be the cause?

i had the same vehicle...sounds like it could be clogged injectors or a problem with your transmission. I would try a serious injector cleaner first. If that doesn't work take it to a transmission specialist. Also if you would like you can call a local jeep dealership and speak to someone in the service department. I have had to do this several times. They are ususally really helpful.

do you have the 5.2L or the 5.9L . check your distributor cap and rotor first and formost, its in the rear of the engine. yes it still has one. then check your wires and plugs. sounds like you need a good tune-up. also look for any vacuum leaks, especially on the drivers side of the intake. I have a 98 with the 5.9L so I am very familar with this Jeep :)

major tune up or possibly jumped time (timing chain)

a bad converter would also cause this to happen.
