My brother is divorced. His daughter, whose going to be 7, lives with her mother. His ex-wife is being difficult and wants my brother out of their daughter's life for no good reason. They are constantly going to court over their daughter. If my niece takes home gifts from my side of the family, the gifts "disappear". So, my brother has to keep her gifts at his house. Which means my niece only gets to play with them every other weekend, if my ex-sister-in-law actually shows up at the meeting location and lets my niece go with my brother. My brother is going to have a birthday party for her 7th birthday. I asked him what I should get. His response was, "Not much." I tried to get more info out of him but he had no suggestions. I don't know what she's interested in right now, what sizes she's wearing, nothing. What should I get her?

A disposable camera and little photo album for her to take pictures of the party. Your brother can then get them developed and she can put them in the photo album the next time she comes to visit with him.

Are you going to see her before her party? If so go get her size (just look at her tag) and get some extra cute girlie pajamas to leave at your brothers. Just because her mom is being a stupid b**** doesn't mean your brother should deprive her based on only being at his house every other weekend or so. Or you could get a pretty pink (or her fav color) tote/basket filled with girlie smelling shampoo, cream rinse, body lotion, etc. Maybe even through in a couple things of lip gloss, or some hairbrushes etc. I would bet she has no cool stuff like this at her dads, and would love to not have to use the dads stuff. Plus all little kids think it's cool to have their own private grown up body products.

I feel so for your brother. This is difficult and I wish the courts would crack down on these mothers. They do irreparable damages to their children and the kids will grow up hating them for it. But, on a good note, if your brother stands firm and doesn't stoop to his ex's level, and continues to stand up to her legally and stay in his daughters life, the ex will live to regret her words & actions.

My ex & I shared custody and he pulled all the same crap with me. Stupid. I warned my ex that eventually, when our son grew up and had reasoning skills that he would see the truth and hate his father. He did, and he does.

I just kept the high road, wouldn't bad mouth him, refused to get pulled into verbal arguments with him and generally controlled myself from ripping his head off. It was the hardest thing I ever did, but it finally dawned on me 1- I divorced his butt so I wouldn't have to fight anymore and 2-you can't control what other people do, just your reactions to it. So I quit reacting and started using the mail and courts to make him play fair.

Tell your brother to trust me on this one.

both of my girls have one and we have never had a safety issue. They wear helmets, only ride on the sidewalk and no hotdogging. I think if it is okay with her parents and she knows and obeys the safety rules a scooter is a great idea. My daughters aunt gave her a scotter for he 7th or 8th birthday- she is 11 now and still uses and enjoys it. That is a good thing about this kind of gift- it is unlikely to be forgotten under a bunch of other junk in a couple of weeks.

She may want to shop for herself, my 6 yr old LOVES gift certificates. It gives her the freedom to get what she wants (for the most part). You can never go wrong with a CG.
Good luck and I wish your brother luck with the situation.

I think your best bet would be to go with something safe. Such as something any little girl would like. Maybe some hair things like hair ties and barrets. Or maybe a Barbie doll and throw in some cool bracelets. I'm sure you'll find something..good luck :-)

if you want something fancy buy her anything from the Leapfrog brand, these items are educational and fun. However, you can also get her board games, these encourage communication and it sounds like your niece and her dad need to spend some time together.
