Religion are the laws of God which where given at the time of creation (the Vedas) How to live in this world without creating suffering to ones self or others. Then man miss used and changes things to fit his idea and the everything appears to be lost. Religion was first and then faith became lost through time. Krishna says int the Gita " Whenever there is a decline in religious principals and the truth appears to be lost, I come again and again or send my representative to reestablish the truth." I think religion came first, because you can't have faith in something that doesn't exist, and the entire idea of religion in having faith in something you have never seen, heard, etc.

religion because this is one of the three ways a person can gain " power " in a society the other two are politics and the military. faith comes after the religion is established and those in charge properly perform their duties according to the laws rules and mores as specified in the society.

In the beginning there was no faith, because God interacted with man.Faith did not become an issue until after the great flood of Genesis.God told Noah that he was not going to interfere with man's business again. Therefore he went silent.Noah wept.
When God saw that sin had ran wild, and their sins were sending them to hell. That is when he sent his only begotten son to die on the cross for our sins.
The perfect sacrifice to end all sacrifice.Jesus dying on the cross paid for your sins and mine.Legally taken back from the devil. The devil thought he had killed God when they hung Jesus on the cross, but instead his trick backfired on him.God won the battle for our sins,by sacrificing his son on the cross at Calvary.
By going silent God didn't forsake us.He had a bigger plan already in progress.God is perfect,God is Holy.God doesn't make mistakes.

i would say faith as a fear to the unknown. humanity at its beginning couldn't explain the way nature works so they started to believe that there was a hyper being for all of the things he could around him. in time that started collapsing. nowdays we have reached a level that we can question everything. tomorrow there will be answers for a lot more.
