There are differences in insomnia.
Obviously you stated you aren't sleeping, but are you actually tired?
If you are tired but can't sleep, there may be chemical imbalances (depression, caffeine, ...) or unaknowledged stresses.
If you can't sleep because you don't feel tired (and you aren't taking drugs or caffeine or anything...) , then take Matahari's advice, your body will sleep when it needs to. Go exercise or read a book or catch up on some work.
Medication for insomnia shold be the absolute last resort. IMHO those are not to be taken lightly. Some lifestyle changes may be in order. What do you eat through the day, do you eat late in the day? What is your sleeping environment like? Ideally your bedroom should be for 2 things and 2 things only: sleep and sex. Any doctor will tell you the same.
Just some ideas :)

Most people aren't stressed as little kids! :) I suffered with insomnia for a long time as well. For me, it was a symptom is depression, but it is also a symptom of stress. I would recommend counseling as well as exercise. It can be frustrating but my doctor always told me that your body will eventually sleep when it needs to. Talk to your doctor about it. If it becomes a real problem they can prescribe medication to help you.

If you have gone to the doctors then they should of given you some kind of medication to take to ease you into sleep patterns.
Try to keep the same schedule everyday. Don't use caffeine or exercise within 4 hours of going to bed. Make sure you keep sleep patterns the same as possible all the time. Go to bed at the same time every night and relax. I knew someone who suffered w/this and it took awhile but he was able to reprogram his life so he could sleep. Good luck.

I've had the same prob since I was like 13. I went to a doctor who specialized in alternative medicine. Good way to go to sleep.....start at the top of your body and work your way down. Tense the muscles, then relax them. I always fall asleep half way through. Also.....make sure your tounge is not pressed to the top of your mouth. You'd be surprised how big of a diff. that makes.
