In the grand scheme of things, very little.
One volcanic eruption can spew as much pollutants as all the cars & trucks in the world do in 10 years.
What makes us think we can take so much of the credit for pollution?

it is very possible that you have a broken injector head. Such would cause more fuel to be entering than supposed to. Take hence, when you replace one injector, you MUST replace them all in order to get equal performance. Please do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Being in the auto repair industry for as long as I have, I have had customers bring me their car and ask "whats wrong?" after they replaced only one injector. It does make a difference. Replacing all of them at once might be a little pricey, but it will pay off in the long run. DO NOT do what PhilGee says, DO NOT spray that mass air flow sensor with brake cleaner, spray it with NOTHING. you are taking a chance of messing up a part that will cost around $300 to replace.

It's soot particulates from burning diesel. The reason that diesel is not popular in the US as an auto fuel is due to the "dirtiness" of the fuel. Diesel has a larger concentration of sulfur in it, which is a major cause of acid rain. The US has started to create low-sulfur diesel fuels this year. This will reduce the acid rain problem.
The soot particulates get breathed in and lodge deep in the lungs since they are so small. Jury is still out if it causes cancer or not.

suz is right. The large trucks are powered by diesel engines. All diesel engines have black smoky exhaust, some more than others. You'll see the same black smoke from diesel powered passenger vehicles, ships, and railroad locomotives.

the carbon monoxide coming out of the exhaust goes up into our atmosphere and damages our ozone levels which could then cause global warming. the harmful gas as well can cause acid rain which damages old buildings, thats why most of the very old buildings you see today are decaying.
