The place to start is with your living relatives. Interview all those who are willing to share their memories. If there is a Church of the Later Day Saints (Mormon) in your area, call them and ask if they have a Family History Center. If they do, there will be volunteers there who can help you do your family search. They have forms you can use, and they can show you how to start a Personal Ancestry File (PAF). There are also many sources on the internet and in local libraries.

Good luck and good hunting!

The best site on the net is familysearch.org

They are free, have free tools and the largest collection of names. But be aware, that it is a lot of work and the more names and dates you have to start with, the easier it is.

So make sure you find out about all the grandparents and greatgrandparents, birthdays, birthplaces and wedding help a lot.

Websites such as rootsweb.com, ancestry.com, familysearch.org are a good place to start. You could also join an MSN group called AGenealogyExperience (will link below). They have tutorials to help you get started, and a chat room if you need help. You could also try to google your surname and see what comes up.
