i just applied to an on-line application in newyorkcares.com so that i can be some kid's secret santa. Now that i think about it, i hope the kid does not wish for anything expensive.

Can anyone who has done this explain to me better how this works?

How wonderful of you! Usually, you will be provided with the age and sex of the child, and then a few items that the child could use, or might be wishing for. Then you can choose which to buy.
Many years ago my child received a ski jacket and ski pants with mittens and hat from a secret santa. It was during a particularly hard time for me, and it was such a welcome gift.
Thank you to people like you for wanting to help people!

A secret santa is a person who gives gifts. They give a gift 1 a week for the 3 weeks before christmas. Its up to you to get what you think they would like. Usually the first two gifts are small and simple. The last one is more like a board game or something in a similar price range.

Yes, I did it thru a local radio station a couple of years ago. What happens is the kid submits a couple of items that they would like - one of them being the gift they'd like the most in the world. Very rarely are they expensive - the kid I got wanted some Tiger handheld game that with batteries was $30. You have to remember, these kids often have nothing, so they're not going to want an X-box for the most part...

Kudos to you for helping a child have a better holiday!

We do this every year thru the giving trees at department stores. We participate with our young daughter and she helps us pick the children and the items. As far as I am concerned, you can never give enough to a child in need at christmas! Usually, secret santa will limit the gifts or cost, you can get as many or as few gifts as you like. Our company also sponsors kids so the whole company chooses a family and sponsors their Christmas.

You can check with local teenage group homes, shelters, and hospitals for possible recipients too...how wonderful of you!

well im 19 and i do it every year since i was 14 the you will be provided with a list of things the kid would like and for me i picked 3 things from each childs list.... some agencys have a limit on how much to buy.. the kids ask for expensive things because duh---there kids but they also ask for simple things..you'll be quit surprised, but i say its better to give then to recieve so give all you can to those kids because chances are they have no family or noone to spend the holidays with...the gifts you send will be the highlight of the child life and that makes it worth the money ...

i don't know about the new york chapter but i've been one before through a charity org. and usually you get a list of gifts the child wants, some are inexpensive some expensive but those in charge usually keep the cost down. its really up to you how much you want to get for the child as sometimes a child has multiple 'secret santas'. just give or buy what you can afford and no matter what it is it will be appreciated.

Generally you're permitted to spend as much or as little as you like. The child provides a wish list with a number of needed items. You can spend as little or as much as you like. Remember, these kids are in NEED of things. Were it not for people like you, they'd get nothing. If it's beyond your means, try enlisting the help of a couple friends or co-workers to make it a joint effort.

I've never done that before, but they usually have a limit on what they can ask for. I've done the salvation army "angels" and other things like it. They will also give you a few things they want and it is up to you to choose what you want to buy.

Yes, I've put on a ridiculous costume and stuffed myself with pillows and put on makeup and a long white beard and santa hat and told children to sit on my lap.
