Basically I am a solo artist and I am looking for more promotion via competitions such as battle of the bands, songwritng comps and anything else anyone can suggest

try and find some agents as they will be able to tell you about evenings in your area where they preview a range of local performers. failing that try the monthly newspaper the stage.

Since you're in London, which is a major cultural center, there are bound to be good competitions to enter in your area, and most competitions send their information to centers of education. So ask at universities, musical academies, high schools, and even music stores that offer lessons. And check the bulletin boards at pubs and coffee houses that have open mike nights—they often have liberal amounts of information available to the amateur and aspiring artist.
