External flash guns offer much more power than the built in flash on your camera. Useful when you are photographing with fill flash outside or taking photos of groups of people, where you are not close to the subject but still want some highlighting.

Also, the built in flash is very close to the lens, this makes "red eye" much worse. The further away from the lens is from the flash, the less apparent red eye will be.

Furthermore, you get to choose what direction the shadows are in relation to the photo, with a built in flash, you can't make this choice.

Lastly, the inbuilt flash knocks the camera's batteries around, whereas an external flash gun has its own batteries, meaning more shots between battery changes, critical for events such as weddings etc.

You can use a flash when there is not enough ambient light and your subject is in shadow or you want to add extra light to highlight your subject.
Not all external flashguns will work with Digitals, you would need to research the camera web site to see which one they recommend, some flashes will fire at the wrong time and only illuminate half of the frame.
If this is the case you would have to go to Aperture priority and slow down the shutter which may mean using a tripod.

his will eliminate any shadows and is great for fill in flash on bright, sunny days. Use it anywhere that there are deep shadows or areas of particularly bad lighting.

It is about what kind of light you need. Flash is sometimes too harsh.
