My boyfriend recently had a root canal on a badly decayed tooth. Everything was fine until he developed a tooth abscess this morning. He says he's not really in pain, but he won't be able to get to the dentist for a couple of days, which worries me. I know that the dentist will drain the abscess for him, but he wants to do this himself. Is it a good idea?

No, not a good idea, try to speak to the dentist, he might prescribe a course of antibiotics.
If the fistula (little blister) bursts on its own rinse with lukewarm saltwater

No is the short answer. If he does that the infection site will be open and possibly make it worse. He needs to see his dentist urgently, they will prescribe antibiotics to clear it up as they dont tend to drain tehm now. If he gets pain and cant get there for a couple of days he can take both paracetamol and ibuprofen together as they have different ingredients they dont count together as doses. 1 is an in falmmatory and the pother a painkiller. Works very well, we have been advised this by a doctor when our daughter was ill.

Absolutely not! He could be risking osteomyelitis (bone infection), dental sinus or even a blood clot. He needs to get to a dentist ASAP - ring NHS Direct (0845 46 47) for the nearest emergency dentist tonight and get him there. The sooner it's treated the less chance of complications.

NOPE! Blisters and abscesses are there for a reason. Popping them is counterproductive to why you get them to begin with.

Gargle with warm salt water until it goes away and then go to the dentist.

Please don't. I suffered a few times with them several years ago and one burst and I was forced to drink some high strength antibiotic powdered drink at the dentist. I was then given more antibiotics to take to stop the spread of infection. The canal work has obviously not cleared the infection, see your dentist.

He must go to the dentist, he must be in agony, I was a few moths back. Don't let him do this himself, it will have infection in as it is, he don't want to make it worse. He will also need some antibiotics to clear it up. the dentist should give priority with an absess.

Yes, take a clean needle and prick it. It will drain and feel much better. A hypodermic needle works the best. Then rinse with salt water or listerine.
Too bad you don't have the root of echinacea. It is a pain reliever and will heal an abcess.

DON"T!!!! Let the dentist give him the antibiotics for it. Sometimes they do not drain it and will give you medicine to get rid of it. Those things are full of bacteria and could possibly cause other infections if it is not treated properly.
