i bought my pc second hand so i dont know which sound card is installed and device manager cannot update my drivers because i do not have the correct software. can i find out which card i have without looking inside?

Easiest way is to download and run Everest or Sisoft-Sandra. This will tell you all you want to know about whats inside the box without having to open it.
When you find out what card you have, go to the manufacturers web-site to download the most recent drivers. Instructions should also be on the relevant download page.

I assume you have an internet connection.
The "newer" versions of windows have the option of letting the computer search the Internet for the correct drivers.
That would be the EASIEST way to get the drivers.
