When will 'religion' stop being the cause of all your trouble? It is so easy to blame what you don't like, for all the horrors in the world. War. Hobbling science. Disrespect. Hate.

Islam started as a center of learning and culture, expanding, tolerant. Kahn and europe stopped their expansion. Protestants helped bring about the industrial revolution and new ways of thought. Without many protestant scientists, we would still be in the dark.

The 'Real' reasons of strife in the world are money and power. War is industry. Health is industry. Safety is industry. A doctor used to live in the same houses as his patients. Now, they are the elite. Innovators came from the masses. Those who saw a benefit, built up empires from the invention. War is not about oil, religion or nationality. It is about money. It is about fear. Global warming, Iraq, crime rate....why does this dominate our news?

Fear is the opiate of the masses. We don't question our leaders, but ask for shelter....which they are happy to oblige.

It is easy to put it all on religion, but religion has done immense amounts of good. Morality leads to kindness. religion helps to grow morality. An atheist leans on upbringing and example, for morality.

I do not mean to drift from my point. "Religion" is not the cause, but the wall to hide behind. Money, Power....are the instigators. Religion, politics, fear are the means. Oil.... this is just too big of a target to you. Have you lived in Europe? 6$ a gallon is not unreasonable for petrol. The U.S. can afford it, if Poland can. $5 a pack of cigarettes is the norm. People hide behind religion, region, politics....to get to their goal of power. The crusades were about power, not christianity. Terrorism from Islam is about power, not paradise. The true followers of faith are the ones caring for and helping the downtrodden and sick. What do you do?

You are absolutely right. It is not religion but man's greed and need to belong. Religion is simply a means to organize like folk in order to control them. This is nothing different then what countrys do today in the name of patriotism. One might argue that piety is simply primal patriotism.

Anything can be used for good or evil. Mankind just tends to allow greed to be the decider.

>Why do you blame religion for everything wrong in the world? I don't. Gods don't kill people. People with gods do. >Can't you take responsibility for your own miserable lives? For the most part, my life is pretty all right. >Can you take responsibility for your own choices instead of always acting like religion is oppressing you? Actually, I do. >Do you think if religion disappeared tomorrow that there would be world peace? Certainly not. But definitely a good start in some areas where religious fanatics are suppressing people, killing people, and discrimination. >Do you not realize that man would just find other reasons to hate and murder his brother? Of course. Many murders are simply done out of passion. Wars however. . .well. That's different and this is why I said "Definitely a good start" above. >If religion did disappear then who would you have to blame for the wretched and degenerate way you live your lives? The only times I place blame on "religion" is when it comes to politics. Without religion, that wouldn't be a problem and my life would improve greatly in that area.

I think you are all over the place here.

But, religion is the cause for many things that are wrong. We are in an age where religion should not be a basis for everything.

Religion is an extension of many wars. Sure, the reason the US is going to war IS for money, power, greed, and oil. But from a middle eastern standpoint, it is about the infringment on their society, culture and their RELIGION.

I think religion is the cause or at least a part of the reason for war because during the Crusades, the priests told the people that they would automatically get into Heaven if they fought for God. If people weren't so brainwashed by religion, it wouldn't have happened.

The same goes for the suicide bombers, they were promised a few virgins in Heaven.

Religion is not at the root of "hate"...HUMAN NATURE is...and it would be the same even if there was NO religion. Hatred is a human emotion that's every bit as legitimate as fear, love, sadness, happiness...even those who say "rid the world of HATE" say so because there's certain things about the world that they HATE (while being in denial that they "hate anything"!).

You'll never rid the world of hate anymore easily than one could try to rid the world of LOVE! The best we can do is not let our hatred get the better of us.
Money isn't to blame either...the LUST FOR MONEY and GREED are (and there's another couple human emotions!).

There is no ONE CULPRIT beyond SELFISHNESS...and we're all to blame for that!

There are over 100 religions in this world today. Many of them started by "men" that "claimed" to have "divine revelations" But ask yourself what is the ONE TRUE religion? you will get 100's of different answers. Of course religion is a major source of hate in this world, because on group "dislikes" another for not following their "religion" and vice versa. As long as people disagree even on a minute scale, there will be fighting and arguments and hae in this world. it will never end.

When people are truly religious, when they truly believe, they are less likely to question what they are told to do. Same is true of being afraid. Since the two go hand in hand, it is even more difficult. When the religious are being told wht to do by those who don't believe or want to use them or are just plain crazy, there are many who will respond without thought. That is when we get things like the crusades and the slaughtering of people who don't believe the same way.
Anything that encourages people to follow someone or something exclusively without question is bad.

Religions by themselves are not bad.But for which, humans would have been divided into numerous groups with lots of infighting, resulting in utter chaos.
Problem arises only when it is taken too far.The fanatics and the boastful must be kept in check.
Understanding and mutual respect must be strengthened between the religions.
After all the aim of all the religions is th promote Peace.

Hatred, per se has nothing to do with religion. Though there seems to be a religious element that might augment hatred:
(Envy, Greed, Rebellion, Pride are the underlying reasons.)

James 4:1
From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Religion often promotes hate, and religion is often used to justify hate. That isn't to say that religion is always involved in hate, it clearly isn't, but religion and nationalism are probably the two greatest sources of it in terms of destructive power, as they both feed the homicidal tribal instinct.
