I have an apt to get my 5 year old male Shih Tzu on the 14th. We have had 2 other appointments over the years that my husband has cancelled. Because Shih Tzu's are rather tempremental anyway, he is afraid that because we didnt get him fixed at an early age and waite so long it is going to make him "change". I have assured him that after the first couple of weeks and he recovers from the trauma of the surgery he will go back to normal, but he wouldn't believe me. HELP! PLEASE, someone help me find something that can convince him to keep the appointment in 2 weeks. I dont want to go through this all over again. I would prefer to get him fixed before he gets prostate or testicular cancer and we loose him because of my husbands ignorance! Has anyone heard of dogs personalities "changing" for the worse after neutering at this age?

Neutering doesn't change personality no matter what age you have it done. If he's an grouchy dog, he's going to continue to be a grouchy dog. If he's a sweet lap dog, he will still be a sweet lap dog. The only thing that neutering MIGHT help is marking behavior and roaming. Many dogs, if they have been marking for years, will continue to do so out of habit no matter if they are neutered. It MAY, but not guaranteed, reduce his urge to run away looking for females and fight with other dogs for status, but since he's already 5 years old, if he's been dog aggressive he may continue to be, or if he's always loved dogs, it won't change a thing. The risks of testicular cancer, prostate disease, etc, plus teh chances of impregnating another dog are much higher than the chance that he might change. He will still be the same dog personality-wise no matter what you do.

The only thing that is sure to change is his metabolism, so keep in mind that you will just have to likely cut back on the amount of food you feed him and that's ALL. Why don't you just take the dog and have it neutered no matter what?

If the dog's personality changes, it's for the better. I've never in my life heard of a dog becoming more tempermental/vicious after being neutered.....mostly because it's just not true that neutering them will cause such a change. Neutered males tend to be MUCH mellower, so if you do notice a change, it will be a good one.

Have your husband read this page. It debunks a lot of the excuses people use to keep from neutering/spaying their pets:

PERSONALITIES DO NOT CHANGE!!!!! Personality is what it is from birth..period. The only thing that will change is hormonal driven behaviors and some of them may not change since the dog is an adult and some of those behaviors may now be habit and habits are hard to break.

Behaviors can change for good or bad but it has nothing to do with neutering but rather more to do with owner reaction, training, socializing, etc.

Last year my beautiful Manx cat Theodore went out for the evening and never came back. I love cats and the house didn't feel the same without one, so I picked up Lola from a rescue centre. She was very frightened and would pee all over the house. I found Cat Spraying No More on the internet and the techniques worked almost immediately. I haven't had a problem with Lola since. Amazing! Can't stop your cat peeing in the house? Then worry no more...

Your husband is just being "a man" they are very strange about neutering. They seem to associate it with themselves.
It is healthier for the dog and will not change his personality at all.
If it does it will be for the better not worse.
Cowboys geld their horses as studs are unpredictible and can be uncontrolable around a mare in season. And cowboys are men.
I have heard this excuse from so many men it is just stupid. Get it done and tell him to get over it.

I've never had a male who's personality changed! Your dog may become a little more easy-going, but males who've been neutered still lift their legs and sniff everywhere other dogs have been when they go on walks.

I had my shih tzu neutered and he is just fine. He acts the same, he is a little calmer now but he was a puppy when I had it done. He still humps his stuffed animals though . . .

the only thing that will, change.. other than the obvious loss of his XXX, are his reduced hormones, and less likely hood too get so "aroused". However, he will still be the same dog, same personality..and have the same good and bad habits (those are things that have to be trained and cant be fixed with a snip, snip)
