That is a very good question. I am sure many of them felt much the same way as people do these days about us coming to their doors. However, the message that we bring is the same message that they brought and some loved it and became believers and others didn't. We feel it a great privilege and an obligation to help people gain accurate knowledge of the Bible. The meek(teachable) shall inherit the earth. Through study of the Bible we can gain the means to everlasting life. We will continue knocking on doors and looking for such ones, who truly want to get to know God and Jesus. We go to them because what we have to offer can mean life to those who are rightly disposed. We can't judge who those ones are, so we will continue in our ministry knowing that if God is calling them, we will find them...where ever they are.

Well Papa bear.....first off....the "first Christians" as you call them were not Christians at all....they were Jews who followed the teachings of Jesus. Jesus did not want a religion to form around him. There is also a big difference between speaking in a town square and knocking on someones door at 10:30 on a Saturday morning.
And if this hypothetical door to door did take place, I would imagine they would be just as irritated as we are when somethings burning in the oven and someone won't let us close the door because they're blabbing something unintelligible they read that morning in their bibles.....or watchtowers.
Of course I think that about any door to door faith peddler...not just JW's.

Thank you for recognizing that Jehovah witnesses are just doing the same thing that Jesus and his Apostles did with the way the message was taught and or spread.
The bible says that great crowds would gather to listen and also that people would hear of them coming and go to find them to listen to. The bible also speaks of those that opposed them and how they wanted to stop them and do harm to them and to kill them even so its the same as back then.
Many wittiness's in many places have been attacked and persecuted because of their beliefs and many witnesses have been had great responses to what the are saying.

I think that it doesnt matter if they are Jehovah's Witnesses or Vacuum Cleaner salesmen. People do not like to be challenged in their "own turf" nor do they like to be swindled in their own home. The bible talks about the types of receptions the Apostles had, and obviously, some were worse than others. Jesus told them to knock the dust off their sandals and keep movin' on, the dust will be a testimony and witness against them. Others took them in and fed them and entertained them (in the sense of giving provisions, attention, etc.).

The early Christians and Apostles taught in public places (e.g. Paul at Mars Hill in Athens, the Apostles in the temple courtyard Solomon's Colonnade, Stephen before the Sanhedrin and its audience).
As far as door-knockers go, most people do not want to be disturbed at home. Even if they are seeking God, they are not going to sit at the door and wait. They will either start reading their Bible, seeking friends advice or visiting churches.

I think it shows that human beings have never been tolerant of those different than them. If we could all learn to accept those different from us instead of trying to make them like us, the world would be a better, less violent place.

The same thing we would do today---kick them out, if they would not go with a mere comment from us of having no interest.
