They teach kids Spanish because they know that Spanish is a much cooler language than English.

The schools teach children Spanish because there is a large Latino immigrant population in the United States. It is the most practical of many languages around the world to learn in the US.

However, the schools are not necessarily teaching for fluency; even at intermediate to advanced level Spanish, I cannot say I retained much from the school system. My Spanish has greatly improved by living in a multi-cultural environment where Spanish is spoken just as often as English.

Many immigrants may see no value in speaking English, as it is completely possible to get by without speaking the English language at all. There are areas within New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Chicago (among many other US cities) where a person can leave their home to conduct business, run errands, and meet with friends, and never have to speak a word of English their entire day.

They teach spanish along with a whole variety of languages. Its much easier in life to be bi lingual nowadays. But they main thing they are upset about is that when they come here alot don't want to speak english, they expect you to learn spanish. I know a little bit of spanish and I am slowly teaching my friends who don't know good english how to speak better.

Oh and to Mendia, what part of missouri do you live at? Because Kansas City, Missouri, where I'm usually at has more spanish people then anything else.

Here in California, Spanish can be taken by children in Intermediate and High school as an elective but nobody is forced to learn Spanish. In elementary schools here there is bilingual teaching to aide children who only speak Spanish in learning English, although I myself dont agree with that one having not had the same benefit when I started school, I feel that bilingual teaching only slows down the learning process but understand that there are children who do need it. But even children in elementary school are not made to learn Spanish. People who get upset when Illegal immigrants come here not knowing English seem to think that in Mexico every town has a library or other resources for learning English which is ridiculous when a large majority of that country cannot even read in their own language let alone a foreign one!! Then they come here whether they come legally or not, and they are criticized at that point as well for not speaking it, that's so dumb! Is that supposed to encourage them to assimilate and not acquire anger and disdain towards americans??!!

As a child and being both Mexican and Caucasian I was taught Spanish as my first language. My mother always told me that I could learn perfect English in school, but I was never going to be taught perfect Spanish in schools in the US if they (my parents) didn't teach me (My mother is half Caucasian). So I am very proud and happy that they taught me to speak perfect Spanish as a child. Now I speak perfect Spanish and English, I am now bilingual and learning French.

I have no problem with schools teaching Spanish as an elective class. I do have a problem with our tax dollars paying for teachers to teach in Spanish. It is assisting the lazy mentality of the parents who refuse to acclimate to our culture and our language. It is also giving jobs to people who may be less qualified to teach but get the job anyway just because they are bi-lingual. Anyone who does not want to learn English in the US is self imposing their own disability. It's like saying, "I'm moving to Canada, but I am cutting off my tongue first so that nobody can understand me." Anyone too lazy to come here legally and too lazy to learn the language in order to further their potential in the job market is in the wrong country. I speak fluent Spanish, but I refuse to speak it to customers where I work. I will not assist them in turning our country into a bigger joke than it already is. The world is laughing at us and with good reason. We are rewarding illegal immigrants with free health care, free social services and no background checks. They do not deserve to be spoken to in their language also.

i think people in this country are too scare to learn something new and they don't like change either. they need things dumbmified so they rather don't learn another language. also they really think their children can't learn and its going to slow them down. its really sad of them to be so narrow minded.

my daugther is 7 and she is fluent in Spanish, English, she is learning French and knows some sign language, i dont see how learning more languages is slowing her down.

i think they should teach more languages not just Spanish.

It is disrespectful to go to another country and refuse to learn the language of that country. It is an insult to the citizens of that country. If you take a minute and think how you would feel if your country were overridden with millions of foreigners who refused to respect the laws or learn the language, you will understand.

Because they are in the States and they are supposed to be taught English too. But also, the kids that get taught Spanish wont be able to speak it fluently. AMERICA SPEAKS ENGLISH! I got family members living in the States, they dont speak Spanish fluently!
