My parents migrated here from Germany during Hitler's Reign of horror. It took 9 years for them to gain access.

For the most part, the US Military and families of military welcomed them without a problem. It was the general public, less knowledgeable, motivated by fear of Germans with a narrow view that were mean, however because the military needed to profile, they gladly submitted to any request and were deeply thankful to be in the USA.

When the Germans arrived in large numbers they were not treated as well as when their numbers were sparse. Americans have always had some misgivings about all kinds of immigration. They knew it grew the nation, but it also made problems in society. Germans had it easy relative to others though. Their light skin enabled them to "pass" as "regular" (white) Americans always, and they practiced very hard to lose their German accents, which betrayed their ethnicity.

The experience of people with darker skin types has been very different. People are simple really, and they have always been inclined to reduce their assessments of others to ridiculously superficial appearances. This becomes part of the racist American culture, and even today (albeit much less common) some people have learned from parents and lower-class environments to judge people by skin color. As I say, Germans had much fewer problems than others. To illustrate the stark differences, in World War Two the Japanese were interred in prison camps in California, but the German population was totally free. In fact, the leader of the allied forces in Europe, Dwight Eisenhower, was of German extraction himself. Wow! Is there any more striking evidence of how significant physical appearance is?!!

Not bad at all during the mid 1800 to 1936 or so. When Hitler was doing his thing Germans were watched close. My Grandfather who was born in Oregon had all his guns taken from him in 1941. He was required to report the authorities on a weekly basis. After the war was over he got his guns back. Kind of funny.. My uncle was in the Navy during WW11. Fought in the Pacific.
