A real American is a person choosing US as their country, have or gained legal citizenship, regard this as their chosen land, their source and willing to die for it and all the US stands for. Many colors, many origins and many men of honor.
That is a real American.

I am a real American because my ancestors were Indians. Everyone else's ancestors were illegal immigrants from Ireland, England, etc so they can get the heck off of my land.

If I had to expand the definition, I'd venture to say that outside of Native Americans, anyone who was brought to this country forcibly, could identify as a real American. Especially if one cannot trace identify their specific country of origin.

"REAL" Americans are Native Americans and people who immigrated here legally and were 'naturalized'. Their children are 'native' Americans, born here of parents of legal citizenship. We are LEGAL American citizens. We are NOT illegal, we are NOT immigrants. We are citizens of the U.S.

Apparently, NO human beings are native to the Western Hemisphere. It is currently thought that humans first appeared in Africa and migrated in the last 100,000 years or so.
American is a political and legal designation, not an ethnic one. The beauty of our country is that just about anyone can emigrate, adopt our values and become an American.
