I spoke with my mother (an experienced nurse), who went to a health care/informational convention on the subject. She tried to alert me to the best ways of preparing for the outbreak, however I would like to hear a second opinion, that is contrary(or not) to that of my mother's bleak view on the topic. I'm just curious what others are doing to prepare, since this subject isn't being covered very well by the media.

I have been preparing for the avian flu for about six months. I keep an extra propane gas canister for my grill. I also have coleman fuel for my stove and lantern in case of power outages. I have stockpiled non perishable food under the bed - in 5 gallon jars. (rice, lentils, beans, sugar, flour, and canned meats) I have medical supplies like acetametaphin and ibuprofen put aside and still need to get things for fluid replacement in case of vomiting or sweating. I also want to get some masks for when I have to go out and extra bottles of hand sanitizer. Prevention will be the key. So practice good sanitation and keep isolated when the virus is active.

I agree with star, but if you really want to do something, you might as well work on improving general health, reducing stress in your lifestyle (weakens the immune system) - at least this way, you will end up better off either way. If you have the bunker living personality that the above posters seem to have, then do that by all means, but I personally would rather live my life as long as I can, instead of something else for longer.

I think you should just follow some common sense advice and eat well, wash your hands and get plenty of rest. I think the Avian Flu has died down in the media because, well, it is just going to die down. Just take care of yourself and if there is an outbreak of anything your immune system will survive it if you're in good health.
