I recently read in a thread on here that Kirkland dog food is a decent brand of dog food. Problem is, there is no Costco where we live. I don't think there is one within a 100 mile radius. Is there anywhere else it can be purchased?

Indrul1, I'm sorry, but bil-jac is to expensive to buy. I wasn't asking what other dogs foods I can buy, I was asking where to get a specific one.

The Diamond recall was not in all areas. You can get on the Diamond web site to see the areas of the recalls. I feed Diamond, mainly premium adult (green bag) at my kennel. I have used Diamond for years and the dogs do good on it.

Would you really feed your dog a food in which five of the first seven ingredients are grains and most of them are partial grains at that!!! Wheat flour is the least nutritious part of the wheat. Corn gluten meal is the protein part of the corn so they are passing that off as one of the major protein sources. Splitting is another characteristic of a low grade food. Generic terms like poultry fat is another. And then there is the menadione. Castor & Pollux is a good food. Blue Buffalo and AvoDerm are very good foods and sell for about $47 at PetSmart. It will cost you less to feed one of them than it will to feed Nutro Max because you will have to feed much more Nutro Max. 4 3/4 cups Nutro max for 75 pound dog, 3 1/4 cups Blue Buffalo, 4 1/2 cups AvoDerm. Chicken Meal, Wheat Flour, Ground Whole Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat, Ground Rice,

the answer is not to buy kirkland, go with bil-jac, thats the most high quality stuff there is, ive used it for more than 20 years and it has never failed me.

the person below me is completely jaded by some dumbass sales rep for whatever the hell that brand is. you should seriously look into the facts you present before telling others your OPINIONS
number 1. chicken by products include an abundancy of meat, including the livers, which are quite healthy for the dog
2. wheat is used to chemically balance out the acidity of dog food therefore creating a healthier ph level for the dog
3. Funny you talk about fish meal, because youve probably had it yourself. I know of a few dogfood companies who take the fish meal from the mcdonalds plant that makes the fish sandwiches.
Most chicken "byproducts" are actually more white meat than anything. The chineese consider the brains, feet eyes, ect as a delacasy and discard most white meat. Smart dogfood companies can use this perfectly good meat for their dogfood which is quite high quality stuff.

I think Kirkland is exclusive to Costco.

Kirkland is made by Diamond and is exlusive to Costco. I know you added you didn't want to know about other brands but being a pet nutritionist can I please make a recommendation.

Diamond recently had a huge recall on a number of its brands of food because of contamination which led to the death of a large number of dogs and causing many others to be sick. No company that sells contaminated food should be trusted.

Kirkland is NOT a good quality food and if you are concerned about the high prices of the high quality foods, there are brands out there that made by trusted companies but are in the price range of Kirkland.

Healthwise is made by Natura Pet Products which produces the healthiest pet foods in the world (Innova, Evo, Karma, California Natural). Healthwise is a good quality, basic food. It is not a holistic food but it still offers your dog all the nutrients it needs to thrive...and its made by one of the only companies in the world that has a superior reputation for quality foods.

I know this is information you obviously don't want but if I didn't give it to you, I wouldn't be doing your dog any justice and as a pet nutritionist, I have the health of every animal as priority. If you decide to atleast checkout the Healthwise, go to www.naturapet.com.

Take care.

Bear2...

Just to let you know....here is what you are feeding your dogs
Diamond Premium Adult (green bag):

-CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL(this is the feet, feathers, beaks, organs of the chicken...this contains NO actual chicken meat which means your dog is not digesting it)
-WHOLE GRAIN GROUND CORN (one of the most commonly used fillers and allergens in dogs and is only 40% digestible so it provides next to no nutrition)
-WHEAT FLOUR (another common allergen and cheap filler used in dog foods)
-CHICKEN FAT (this is okay but should be much farther down the ingredient list)
-BREWERS RICE (this a rice fraction, high quality foods use whole grain white and brown rice, this fraction has no nutritional value)
-BEET PULP (should NOT be in pet foods. It is a cheap filler that often is the culprit of stomach/digestion problems)
-EGG PRODUCT (this is egg shells and undeveloped eggs not fit for human comsumption)
-FLAXSEED (good ingredient...the ONLY one)
-FISHMEAL (this should state what type of fish, this company is obviously hiding the source)

This food is pretty disgusting, especially since it contains next to no actual meat in it. I would be careful when you recommend a food and cannot back it up by the quality of the ingredients.
