The link between antidepressants and suicidality is blown way out of proportion. See how: when someone is suffering from a major depression, you have physical symptoms such as extreme fatigue and lack of initiative that accompanies the feelings of hopelessness. Let's say this person is suicidal too. When you first start taking antidepressants, the first thing to usually happen is the person gets some relief from the phyical symptoms, but they are still hopeless and suicidal cos that doesn't go away as easily. So now you have a hopeless and suicidal person who has more energy than they did before, and maybe the only thing keeping them alive before was they were too drained to make a suicide attempt, but now that they're up and around with more energy they may realize that it's not really as hard to go out and buy a gun as it seemed before. That's why it's so important when taking medication to see a psychologist regularly too, especially if the person is suicidal.

And don't listen to people who say antidepressants are bad, just take vitamins and exercise to cheer up, that's like asking someone with emphysema to quit they're belly-aching and go for a nice long run.

This question depends on the individual. everyone is different and will react to medications differently.

The job of an anti-depressant is to alter or fix the chemical balances in the brain that cause depression. There are many different types that focus on different chemicals. Some focus on Seretonin, others Dopamine...

It all depends. There is no one bad pill all together. not one pill just increases suicidal ideation or thoughts of hopelessness. Generally if someone is on one and they are having suicidal ideations, then the medication may not be working.

I think what you are trying to refer to is the instance of teens being places on anti-depressants and then going on mass killing sprees or killing themselves. Rare, but usually when that happens it is because they are possibly on too much, or theri bodies react and metabolize the medication differently. They also might be misdiagnosed. In some individuals high levels of Anti-depressants can trigger Mania or Manic behavior resulting is possible mixed episodes (mania and depression at the same time) which can be extremely dangerous because while they are having suicidal ideations they also may have the energy plus possible delusions to carry out something harmful to themselves or others.

So you see it's a bit more complicated than just a simple list of anti-depressants being bad.

Although, Drug therapy should only be used in conjuction with a trained psychiatrist (not a family doctor) and TALK THERAPY or some other sort of non medication therapy. There is no cure for depression or bipolar. exercise helps, but is not a cure- pills are not a cure. There is no cure only healthy good management of the illness.

If by "Bad" you mean having serious side effects, they all seem to have side effects associated with them. The only way to know if they will work on you, or if they will have side effects on you is to try some. Some meds can make some people sicker, but other people will not have any reaction at all, or will only have a good result.

The trial and error of psy meds is really frustrating for most people, including me, but if you find the med that helps with your suicidal thoughts, etc., then it's not a bad med - for you.

My advice? Weigh the possible side effects with the possible benefits and go to therapy while you are waiting for the med to have its full effectiveness.

A lot of anti-depressants have side effects but you have to weigh these up against the thoughts that you are having/ the reasons that you are depressed.

Make sure that you speak to your doctor and ask all of the implications of taking drugs and if you are not happy on the ones that they first prescribe then go back and get them to change it to something else. I had a really bad reaction to Prozac but am doing better on Zoloft.

All antidepressants are Very bad. Every kind of antidepressant is Very bad, is very harmful to people. Yes, they all highly increase ones thoughts concerning suicide and thoughts of hopelessness!!!

They also all have very bad negative side affects as well, which you'll have to be prescribed another pill for each and every bad side effect. Gets very expensive as well. One pill leads to having many more to take.
One taking these medications will live in a fog, making it difficult to make wise choices in life!
Antidepressants also eventually destroy the internal organs of the Body! Is it worth it to you or to your loved one?

Instead of antidepressants, use Cognitive Behavior Theraphy. No medications though!!

Antidepressants have an incredible range of side effects. Keep in mind that many people, however, do not get ANY side effects.
Anyway. The most common ones (the ones most people get, and the ones most common in the most amount of antidepressants) are:
Low libido
Insomnia OR sleeping too much/feeling sleepy
Nausea
Headaches
Weight gain OR loss
Stomach problems (like constipation)
For many people who do get them, the side effects subside in a couple of weeks (or months, depending on the person.)
And yes, there's a chance that you could feel more suicidal, but that is a SMALL chance, and if that happens, you can go off your current medication and go to another antidepressant (I switched to Effexor from Zoloft after this happened and I am perfectly fine on Effexor.)

I don't think any antidepressant is "bad". They have different side effects and affect people differently. Here is a link to compare common side effects of different antidepressants.

Almost all are contraindicated in people under 18. Almost all have warnings about increased depression or suicide, especially if discontinuing use.

Approach with EXTREME caution. In my opinion they are over-prescribed and often wrongly prescibed.

Sorry to have to say this, but you're going to end up more confused than ever by asking a question on a subject as complex and controversial as this one.

"The all-purpose pill that guarantees a psychiatric quick fix has finally been exposed as an illusion."

I think they are all bad, dangerous and 98% unnecessary.
