For both of my kids, I used this method, and it worked very well. Always be excited about where you are going, like we were "in a race" to see who could get in and buckle up first. When they got in the car, I would just tell them that the car wouldn't move unless all the seat belts were "clicked". I would get in and put mine on and make sure there's were "clicked"....then I would tell them, it "has to stay locked for the whole ride, or the car would stop and we can't go anywhere if the car stops" I even pulled over and turned the car off and told my son that the car wouldn't work because he took off his seat belt. I only had to do that once. If you are persistent with it, it really works.

Well what I have done to my kids when they were little, now there 18 & 20 , was actually go buy them a newer car seat were they could not unhook the lacth, I know your saying you can't go buy another car seat but that may be your only option, it's not like you can beat them over the head, or logic whith them, there only 2 yrs old, when their that age it's their way or no way. I got a seat that it was hard to unlock, they do have them out there. I guess you could reason with your self and If you go out to eat with your family a few times a month well buy your child a seat instead, that's what I did, Good Luck, love them when there young because they don't want to have anything to do with you much when their older.

OH, NO! My son is 1 and watches me do it all the time, then he tries to do what I did and I keep telling him no, but I can't make him look away and buckle him in at the same time! I hope he doesn't do this! It would scare the heck out of me while I am driving! The best I can think of is get the regular seat buckle to go over the car seat and keep him in... and tell him not to do that! Tell him it scares you and you don't want him to get hurt! Hopefully he understands, but if not, try anything... give him toys to play with in the car to keep his mind occupied... and if that doesn't work, I don't know. I would be afraid to put him in the car, but there is no choice! (And I have the expensive brand new seat that says safety first! They still understand what you are doing when they see you!)

You must have an older car seat. There is no way a 2 year old can unbuckle the belt from a newer one.

That is serious. I think when safety is involved, then if the child will not respond to a good talking to or time out or something, then they should be spanked. My children went through this same phase and as soon as I saw it I pulled that car over and spanked their butts. It didn't take but 3 or 4 times and they never tried it again. It is the same for me when my kids go outside of the gate in the yard, or get close to a road or something.

We had the same problem with our one year old niece. We got her a car seat with a lap bar on it and she hasn't gotten out since then

I went thru the same thing....... I was always pulling over to put her back in the seat.....

I had to go to the police station and have a cop tell her to stay in her seat... It worked.. I tried everything... good luck

I would draw a basic map for my daughter.. give it to her to hold and ask her to make sure I was going the right way. She hadn't a clue how to read the map but it made her feel important and kept her mind off getting herself out of her seat.
