In the UK cider is an alcoholic drink but I keep looking at recipes that involve using apple cider and I am sure this is not what they mean!

in the US, apple cider is basically apple juice that isn't made from concentrate...it is dark brown and cloudy looking and much tastier! I prefer it to 'normal' apple juice. It is freshly pressed juice and it is the same juice which is used to make 'hard cider' which is what the brits refer to as 'cider'.
We americans usually only get it in the fall/autumn, when the apples are in season...local farms/orchards make the juice and you can buy it from them or from small grocery stores or local supermarkets.
It is delicious!

In the US apple cider is the unclarified but filtered juices made from apple pressing. There is no alcohol involved. In context to your question, yes apple cider is similar to apple juice.

Apple cider has the inclusion of pulp from the apples. The apples are simply pressed to extract their goodness. Apple juice uses a complicated process as well as clarification and additives.

Apple cider is cloudy and less processed than regular apple juice, which is usually clear. Apple cider is usually tarter, with a fresher apple taste than clear apple juice.

no it's not the same as apple juice & it's not acloholic either.
I think it is made from fermented apples but not to the point where it becomes alcoholic, it looks like cloudy apple juice but doesn't taste as sweet & you can't get it all year round so must be seaonal.

Unfortunately for your cooking I don't think there is an equivalent in the UK as I never heard of it until I started going to the US (no great loss though, as I think it's disgusting & tastes like gone off bad fruit !!!)
