Hey Jeffo,
Well half your heritige would be on your fathers side. If he is still available be sure to interview him. Then on your Mom's side, the records should now be available to you. See the site on adoptions below. Adoptions are the most difficult. Do you know if she had any clue who her birth parents were? Are your Grandparents alive? Can you interview her adoptive parents? Will your father let you go through any paperwork she may have had - talk openly to him about it.
Also, check out the DNA sites, some free, some global projects. I think you should do the free one first.
Anyway, sorry for your loss, best of luck on your search.

Firstly I'm sorry to hear your news. Try and find out from a family solicitor if she had one. If you have any of her birth records you may be able to get help from the hospital where she was born or public records office (registary of Births Deaths and Marriages). If she was given up for adoption by her mother due to her mothers circumstances this may be difficult. There is also Genes Reunited, an internet partner of friends reunited. If you know any of her school information you may also be able to use Friends reunited. Any older family relatives still alive that you can make enquries with ??? Good luck xxxx

There is a website with online tools at adoptees, genealogists, and those searching for missing persons at http://www.genesearch.com/people/
At the bottom of the page are several resources specifically for those researching adoptees.

If there is a Mormon Church in your area, you can go there. They have a great Geneology research program.
