Cash is generally not accepted on board the ship. Everything is billed directly to your room. You can choose to settle the debt with cash.
Drinks are not painfully expensive, but they aren't cheap, either. Expect to spend $6-$8 on their fruity concotion of the day and closely keep track of what you are spending if it's an issue.
I wouldn't recommend buying any purses on land. They will mostly be illegal fakes or other garbage for tourists. Remember, if you get caught with an illegal bag, customs can confiscate it and if you have several, they can arrest you.

The best place for shopping in the Caribbean is St Thomas. Nassau is small and has some shops but is mostly a "straw market" type shopping place where you get hand made stuff.
Cruise ships don't accept cash or credit cards except to settle your bill. When you arrive at the port to check in you (each passenger) will receive a key card which will serve as your room key, charge card for anything you buy on ship (i.e.,drinks, souvenir) and its also your pass to get on and off ship in each port. When you first board the ship the security personnel will have you insert your key card into a scanner and then will take a photo of you that is included in the magnetic strip on the card. Each time you get off ship you will need this key card and many times also a photo ID (passport or driver's license). This card allows them to keep an accurate track of all passengers entering and/or leaving the ship. Infants and small children may be required to wear an ID bracelet (like in the hospital) in lieu of carry a card.
If you wanat to pay cash to settle your bill at the end of the cruise you just go to the purser's desk and pay.
Yes drinks are pretty expensive. You can save a little on mixed drinks by asking for your drinks in plane glasses rather than the souvenier glasses that they push. It will save you about a dollar a drink.

Go into all the shops, they are all different and will have something for everyone. When you register at the cruise terminal they will scan your credit card and will give you an id card that is everything from your room key to a sudo credit card, you only use cash for gambling/playing bingo. EVERYTHING else is done on the id card. You can cash out anytime on your cruise by going to the pursers office or the front desk, have them bring up your account and pay the balance with cash, or you can leave it on your credit card and pay it when you get your statement. Drinks can be a little pricey, but then again I don't know what you consider expensive. But I drink Kamikaze's and they run me about $6.00 each. I hope this helps and have a great time on your cruise. KG

You didn't say which cruiseline you are travelling with but many cruiselines use a cashless system. When you check in, you register one of your credit cards. This card will be tied in with your room cabin card which will serve as your ID that will be scanned every time you leave or enter the ship (before you board, you'll get a photo taken which gets embedded into your card), your shipboard account card for everything (ship stores, drink purchases, advances for gambling).
If you don't have a credit card, you will be required to give them a cash deposit. All of the above purchases will be against this deposit.

you will need cash for purchases off of the boat. on the carnival cruise line you will have a card called a sail and sign card. this will act as a reentry pass to go on and off the boat, a room key and a on the boat credit card. cash will be placed on the card by you and will be used as a credit card for on the boat purchases. the drinks are not expensive.

When I went to Nassau I loved just going to all the different shops - just a quick warning!!!! If you are just cruising the streets looking at items please remember they are cheap for more than one reason. You are not going to get the best quality of any item in the market. If you are looking for jewelry or a nice purse I would stick to shopping aboard the ship!
