When I changed the time on my watch for daylight savings I turned it counterclockwise. Since watches are always going clockwise I'm wondering if it's bad for it to go in the wrong direction even if it's just to change the time.

nope....that's why you pull the knob out..it disconnects the gears so you can set it, that's usually why the second hand stops as well.

I'm not sure if it's bad for your watch. I do know that my great grand father always said to wind my watch counter-clockwise. He said it helped my watch. Why..? I'll never know.

It should hurt it at all. For additional info..if you have and older clock at home in which you need to wind; don't turn it back that will hurt it
