If so will it make a difference to my hd tv?

No, it's not backwards compatible. You must have an HD Player to use it, no way around it. And no, Blu-ray does not play on HD players, or vice versa.

No, you can't play a HD-DVD in a standard DVD player.

Unless, it is one of those that specifically say you can. The technology does allow a HD-DVD to contain also the standard DVD data. When you put that into a DVD player it behaves just as a standard DVD and the HD part is ignored.

In short, to get a HD-DVD to work in HD then you need to have a HD-DVD player.

HD is another new DVD industry format where getting popular nowaday. HD DVD will only be played in HD DVD player. In order to get HD feature, you must have a HD cable and get connected between your HD DVD player and your HDTV.
