I have noticed in the past couple of months that social security has increased and alot of money is being taken away from my paycheck. It went from about $40.00 to $50.00 to $100.00 or more. What's going on?

Social security tax should be a fixed percentage of your wages in each paycheck. If the wages don't change, social security taxes shouldn't change either, except that if you hit the maximum amount of social security wages in a year, withholding should stop.

If your wages are unchanged, and you are still being paid on the same schedule, find out from your employer why your withholding went up.

Marital Status or the number of dependents does not affect the amount of Social Security that is taken out. Only 6.2% is taken out from gross wages. This is a fixed rate for everyone.

Social security is taken out at a set percentage of your gross wage each paycheck. Every paycheck will have 6.2% of your gross wages taken out. If it is higher than that you need to speak with your supervisor about correcting the payroll.

Social security (6.2%) and medicaid (1.45%) is taken out of everyones check at these percentages. The social security is taken out untill you reach 94,200, then only medicaid is taken out.

Your employer is also required to pay this on your wages(total of 12.4% and 2.9%). Make sure that they are not deducting their portion from your check. I doubt that would happen, but it could.

Assuming that you have not received a pay raise and your marital status and number of dependents has not changed, I would speak to your employer about what's going on.
