Was shooting last night, and found it almost impossible to focus correctly and quickly in very low light conditions.

Most digital cameras have problems auto-focusing in poor lighting. You'll have to switch to manual focus - preset to the anticipated focal distance.

I have one of these also. Low light focus is a nightmare. If you raise the flash it will send out pulses to help with the autofocus but that sorta defeats the purpose. It also strobes out everybody. I believe the external flash units for the cameras send out infrared focus aids without the flash having to fire, but the flashes are almost as expensive as the bodies! Manual focus may be the only alternative, but with the tiny viewfinder screen it's 'nigh impossible.

Take a camare with manual settings.
Open the apperture full.
Set exposure time to minimum.
Use no flash.
