Get up and have some warm milk with honey or a cup of chamomile tea. Read something leisurely or listen to classical music then when you feel tired go to bed. Don't do anything to stimulating like homework or watch the news it just gets your mind running and then you can't rest. If this doesn't work see if your insurance will cover a sleep clinic, some people don't want to sleep because they stop breathing when they sleep and a clinic can diagnose and treat this and many other sleep disorders. You can find out more about sleep disorders at http://www.stanfordhospital.com/clinicsmedServices/clinics/sleep/sleepDisorders.html .

Don't drink alcohol and don't exercise within an hour of when you want to sleep and remove the television from the bedroom. If you refuse to take meds (temporarily) wake up early, avoid napping and exercise that day and read for at least 15 minutes before you want to be asleep.

Read a book. You pass the time well and it makes the eyes tired. If it is possible, go for a walk. The exercise and fresh air will relax you. I am sure there are other things to do to pass the time well and make you relaxed and tired.

Think about all those awful jobs you've been putting off, then think about getting up and doing them. No contest, sleep will win

Read a boring book. If it's chronic, see a doctor.

Try to do something that you find boring. You could also try warm milk with a bit of ground cinnamon.
