Cats are very sensitive to people. Maybe it is something she feels from him. Is he still depressed? Maybe still has those thoughts? The cat may sense those thoughts & think they are for her instead of him. For his mental condition, can you give the cat to a friend for a time? It isn't good to be rejected again & again, even by a cat.

My best goes out to you and your dad.
Do you think you could ask your dad if something may of happened to the cat during his attempted suicide? Not putting the blame on your dad. Then maybe you would have a clue how to handle this situation.
When a cat hisses it means, don't come near me because I have a real good reason for you not to.
If you don't live with your dad now, I would suggest removing the cat and taking it home with you. This poor thing needs to be away from him.
Hoping for the best.

First, I want to say that I really hope that you are going to family counseling for this. I can't imagine the profound and tremendous effect that this must have on the daughter of someone so depressed. I am so sorry, and my sincerest hope is that your family is headed down the road of recovery. My prayers are with you and your dad.
Secondly, cats and other animals are such perceptive creatures that sometimes it's scary. After I lost my grandmother 2 years ago, my cat was so incredibly affectionate toward me. He knew that I was sad and was trying to console me. When I am sick, he knows to stay away from me, as I do not want anyone around me then. My cat used to LOVE my mother-in-law. She has cancer now, and he's not very friendly to her any more. It could be that the cat sees your dad as being ill, that is, not as he was before. Maybe through your dad's healing and therapy process, the cat will come to accept him again.
Good luck & God bless!

Not trying to sound mean or anything but making he tried to hurt the cat? That could be a reason or maybe the cat realizes what your dad had intended and therefor has decided that she doesn't want to go near him. Animals are funny sometimes and no one can really tell why they do the things they do.

Well, my sister has a cat who is not friendly. I don't pet the cat, I just let the cat go around my legs. If your cat hides from yr father, there's probably nothing you can do. Has he been feeding her, and talking to the cat. Maybe that will help.

Cats are very in tune to emotions, body language, and chemical make-up of people. If your dad tried to kill himself (and I am so sorry about that) with pills, he is going to smell strange for awhile. Regardless of how he did it, he is obviously depressed. Depression does trigger different hormones and chemical reactions in our bodies. In fact, if he is on medication now for depression, he is going to smell different. And, people act different when depressed. If he tried to commit suicide and the cat was present, she could be afraid of him now.
I hope your dad is getting help. If so, once he is better the cat should be better with him. In the meantime, he can try to win her back by giving her yummy treats and offering to play with her with her favorite toy. He shouldn't force anything; go at her pace. He may need to start by just sitting on the floor a few feet away from her and tossing a few bits of chicken (or whatever she likes) to her for a few minutes. He can interact more with her as she becomes more comfortable.

Was the cat around him when he made his attempt?Maybe the cat seen it or sensed something bad was gonna go down,so now it doesn't want nothing to do with him.

all the previous answers sound logical. The only other thing I can think of is that the cat can tell there's something "out of whack" with your dad and doesn't want to be around him because it scares her. Like, in your cat's mind, he violated the "normal human behavior" code and now she doesn't trust him.

It could possibly be that the cat can sense that you were definetly affected by it so its not wanting to do be close to him after what he did because it affected you negitavley. But thats just an assumption.

No offense, but that sounds like the behavior of an abused cat. Did he do something to it?
