My sister brought her cat to our house this weekend, our dog became friends with the cat. I thought that it was kind of weird. Please help me figure out why they are friends.

It depends on the dog (and the cat). We have shared our home with both dogs and cats. Our dogs understood that the cats were "part of the pack" and we never had any problems.

Not all of our dogs interacted with the cats to the same degree and vice versa. Some dogs and cats just seem to "hit it off".

Our 4 year old dog and 11 year old cat are very affectionate to each other. They often play and chase each other around. I think one of the reasons our dog has always been so good is because she was never alone, she always had to cat to keep her company.

Our cat (who has 3 legs) was used to being around other dogs and cats because I worked for a vet and frequently brought home other pets. However, he seems to be "closer" to this dog than he was to the others we had. So I guess it just depends on their personalities.

It's great that your sister's cat and your dog are friends, it makes visiting so much nicer! Best of luck.

Because they like each other and can see through the species barrier.

Not all dogs hate cats and vice versa.

It's not weird at all.

I had pet rats that had the run of the house with 3 cats. Everyone got along fabulously! Sometimes the rats and the cats would fight for my lap and the cat would bat one of the rats on the head, but then the cat would get a little nip to his tail. It was actually quite comical!

That is really quite normal. My 29 inches at the shoulder, 115 lb Kuvasz adores his kitties even though they boss him about, play chase and grab his tail, will - just for fun - back him off from his food, sleep on top of him, make him nuzzle and clean them, cheat when playing "chase" by diving under the coffee table and watching him smack his head on the edge and the pouncing on his nose......

You don't say what breed the dog is. While all dogs can learn to behave around a cat, the most common breeds who become deeply attached to them are the ones who were not bred to hunt and chase (GSDs, Dobes, Terriers...) The Sporting beeeds are in the middle once they accept the 'no chase' and then make frineds since they want everyone to love them. The Herding/ herd guarding breeds will hover and dote on them..

Some dogs just get along with cats. I have 3 dog, 3 puppies, and 3 cats and all of them get along just find. They all help eachother get food off the counter and they all play together. It's just their personality I guess. One of my dogs is blind and the cats will actually lead him around the house so he won't run into anything or fall down the stairs.

There is no reason why they shouldn't be friends. I have three cats and a dog that are best friends. They even share the same bed. It is all a matter of personality & dominance. Once that is evened out they are perfectly fine with each other.

It all depends on how they are trained/raised/bred. your dog is either simply very friendly, or trained to be nice to cats, or they had seen/been with cats as a very young puppy. this should answer your question. also don't worry about the dog, cat-dog friendship is a GOOD thing!

because cats and dogs dont always hate eachother? There's nothing weird about it- I used to have a dog that would sleep curled up with our cats. They all adored eachother!

dogs and cats often bond with each other. our golden retreiver "loves" our cat. he will even go find him and bring him in at night. the dog lets the cat groom him and they sleep together. not all dogs see cats as the enemy.
