Countertops are cheap to replace. You don't paint them or anything as food sits on this surface.

Find a local contractor or handy man and talk to them. Countertops are just held on by a few screws and glue. Entire counter will come up. Basic stores like Home Depot, Lowes carries countertops. They run about $100 for 8 foot section. You have multiple choices of colors and designs as well. More expensive would get into slate or marble.

You can have the present countertops wrapped in stainless steel for a retro or modern look but that can get expensive, in the $1000's.

Don't pain them. The paint will have a difficult time sticking to the countertop. Replace the countertop or laminate new plastic countertop sheeting over it.

Do not to paint your countertop. Painting is prone to peeling and corrosion and in such a way you are taking the risk of having your food contaminated if you are preparing on top of a painted countertop. I suggest for you to find contractors who can do the job much better and surer though, like this site: www.fivestarstoneinc.com. You can consult them on what needs to be done.

I would advise against painting, a working surface like that would peel sooner or later no matter what kind of paint you get.

There are some amazing ideas out there, one I liked is a bit hard labor wise, but not too expensive. Ceramic tiles, you epoxy them to a thick piece of plywood to make a counter. Home depot should be able to help you select the right kind of tiles and give you advice on the hows... if you find someone who has done this before get their advise I only read about it in a magazine
