Threats of suicide are always to be taken seriously even if the threat is not seriously meant. You haven't said how your friend regards this or if the son is under a doctor's care for depression.

Urge your friend to seek help for the son. Threats can turn into attempts and the son is crying out for help.

My son's friend was always depressed and talking like that also - my son told his mom and we just spent alot of time being with and listening to his friend. He was just very depressed as kids in school were teasing him- he needed a friend and someone to talk with. He did end up in the hospital for a few days - but just be there and let him talk with you - or if you can have his family check him into a hospital - I hope things will work out with him.

If he's talking about it all the time, then that's a good thing because people who are serious don't tell anyone .. they just go ahead and do it. Talking about it is just a cry for help; he just needs someone that he can talk to about his feelings and why he isn't happy with his life. Preferably this person should be a relative or friend, who he looks up to, is a very good listener and can boost his morale by making him feel good about himself and his life.

Ok this is coming from what I recently experienced. Kids in high school now are finding it cool to be "emo". Emo is short for Emotional and can involve cutting yourself, changing sexual status, wearing make-up, wearing opposite sex clothes, etc. It also includes "saying" your going to commit suicide. I have no idea why this is becoming "in" but it is. I would have your friend check theirs sons wrists for any cuts or scars of cuts. If there is any I would immediately seek help because some people I know have cut large gashes in their knees, wrists, legs, etc.

He needs to talk to a doctor. ANY talk of suicide should always be taken seriously.

Education tell us that the person that talks the most about suicide is the least likely to commit suicide. This is not a hard and fast rule however. I am sure this persons family is aware of this. There is more than likely nothing you can do. My guess is it is very likely an attention getting device and it is probably working.

Talk to your friend about her son getting some therapy, to see what's making him talk about it and fix it. Or if you're close to that son, talk to him yourself, see what's going on. See if maybe he wants some help, or someone to talk to.

If you haven't told his parents then I would do that first then take him by the hand and help him get to someone who he can talk to, and I would do it right now before he takes action. Good luck.

She needs to get him some help. If he says this to his mother, she needs to call 9-1-1 immediately and he will be taken to the hospital and they will get him help with a psychiatrist.
