Don't listen to the people telling you to put your cat down. First, try as someone else suggested to clean the catboxes everyday. Also, you may need to get 2 or 3 catboxes and place them throughout the house. One upstairs and two downstairs would be ideal. Older cats do get finicky about their boxes. I also would agree that you should go to the vet and get the cat checked out for infections. Also, try changing cat litter brands. Sometimes they get it in their head they do not like the cat litter anymore.
Good luck

At 13 I would say he may have reached old age and needs to see a vet. He may very well need to be put to sleep. My cat is also 13 and I have been trying to decide for weeks whether or not its her time. Your cat because of old age may not have the bladder and bowel control to get to the litter box on time or he may have simply forgotten the things he used to know. Sort of like a cat version of alzheimers. Definatley call or go see a vet and make sure that this is why and if not they can tell you what needs to be done and if he would need medication.
Good luck, I know its hard when your pets get older but remember you have to do whats best for them and what will keep them out of pain.

My Mother had a cat that went threw the same thing you have to remember that he's an old cat and like humans they get aches and pains maybe the litter box is to far away and he just can't make it there on time. My mother just moved the litter box since he slept in her bed and the box was at the other side of the house she just put it where he'd have easy access and he didn't do it around the house anymore.

First of all- please don't listen to those who are saying to put your cat down. We cats can live up to twenty years and still maintain a good quality of life.
With the onset of age, some cats may start to act funny and the reasons can be many. I would consult your vet as it could be a psychological or physical reason. If it's a physical reason you need to find out right away in case it could develop into something life threatening. Being a cat myself I just don't like to see any major CATastrophes!
Have a great day and meow a hello to your cat from me, Figaro, and my sister Rosina!!!

This is definatley because of his age. Cats and dogs age just like we do. Its just one of those things you have to be patient with because he is a grandpa cat now. When my cat started doing this I took him to the vet and she said it was time to have him put to sleep because he was only going to get worse and suffer and she was right. I kept him for three more months and finally he was getting so bad he was running into things and not using his litterbox all the time and kept having "accidents" he was 15 years old. I think he lived a good life and thought he deserved to go to kitty heaven and not have to suffer anymore. Good luck

My one cat use to go in the bathtub and I couldn't figure it out. But a vet told me as cats get older, they can get more picky. She was upset that the litter box wasn't cleaner than it was.
Now I scoop it every morning and no more problems.
If that doesn't solve the issue, might be time to realize yours is getting old and might be getting near "that time".

i don't think of shes too previous too replace this habit yet you may desire to discover out why she does it. I do think of she might desire to be too previous for shield as this might upset her greater and persons do not tend to choose for older cats, incredibly ones with lavatory issues. the reality shes a a lot enjoyed puppy a shield existence will probably upset her. i might attempt a vet in case she has have been given any underlying subject. additionally in case you attempt confining her too one room attempt putting down lino it rather is straightforward to scrub and eliminating issues like cushions different than which she makes use of for her mattress. I do wish somebody else can arise with further concepts.

If its a tomcat then he is quite old. Females live for years but the toms only live for 10 -15 years. Sorry.

we also had an older cat that started doing this. he also started losing weight. the first thing to do is take it to the vet. there are a lot of things it could be. it could be a simple bladder problem, but it could be something serious. in our case it was diabetes and kidney failure. older cats are prone to these. please ask your vet.
