It means that you've been hurt. It's a very difficult experience to love and be loved, and then something traumatic happens with it. It feels like something died inside you. But emotional wounds eventually heal, we recover and start over again. I think we call it Broken Heart because of the anguish we feel when love is lost. But rest asured, our hearts are aways intact.

It is just a saying, but it doesn't mean that there isn't a little bit of truth in it. Stress cardiomyopathy (or broken heart syndrome) is a condition were the heart muscles are temporarily weakened. This condition could easily be confused with a heart attack, but it isn't nearly as serious. Extremely depression, an emotional or physical loss may trigger stress cardiomyopathy. For some strange reason majority of cases have been diagnosed in women.

If you've had one, you'll know it. I have. It took me years to get over it.

We aren't talking about true cardiac type heart problems. The type of broken heart we're talking about is emotional.
