It's an outstanding goal, if anyone acts surprised at your goal, it is because not many your age have such a firm grasp of what to do in life. My chosen career path changed several times in college, and still is subject to change. Spell out your goals and what it will take to reach your main objective. Fortunately, your career as an orthodontist/dentist will begin in high school (get good grades to get into a great college), and then awesome grades in college to get into a premier dental school. Of course, there are less than premier dental schools that will get the job done, but why not aim for the top?

Sounds like a darned good profession to me. You would be a professional who could basically call your own shots. If a teacher scoffs at the idea, they need to be taken to the wood shed (and you can tell them for me). Kids are naturally cruel and jealous, but a teacher should encourage you to pursue a good career like this. It is a lot of work, and you will have to go to school for some period of time after high school, but in the long run, it will be a lucrative career. My neice was 14 when she decided to be a pharmacist - after an extended college education, she is now in complete control of her destiny. Hang in there and make your goal. Just be patient, and you can come back to visit the scoffers after your success - charge their kids double when you get your office set up.

the kids are jealous because they have no idea what they want to be, and the teachers probably think it's cute that someone so young thinks they know what the want to be. what it boils down to is you're ahead of the rest, so don't let them bring you down, kiddo.
oh and yes. orthodontist or a dentist is a very very good career in general, and it doesn't matter your age as long as you work hard. I mean, it's not like you're going to be doing it at 14... anyways what i'm trying to say is screw everyone who goes against you and your ambition

It's not a bad career choice for a 14 year old. But I wouldn't want a 14 year old being my dentist/ortho. Don't let their teasing your future career choice, change your mind on it. They're going to be jealous of you someday when you come to the reunion and you actually have a career.

A bit young to start that as most colleges will not take a 14 year old. Other than that, what is really wrong with it? when you get to the day you open your office up, the teachers and others will be the ones eating the crow and coming to you for help when they get cavities. Go for it and don't let any of the teasing get to you.

why would someone tease you for that?? that's a great career goal. dentists and orthodontists make TONS of money, plus they work short hours too...can't beat that. its hard work and a lot of school tho, but it will pay off in the end! your teachers are probably just jealous they didnt go that route! good for you for setting high goals!

You're much better off making that decision now than after you've already gotten halfway through college for a different profession. It's rare to see someone your age who has an interest in a real and achievable career. Believe me, you're much more fortunate than your peers who expect to be rockstars, pro ball players, or movie stars.
So sure, you're a little unusual, but in a good way.

of course, a 14 year old usually does not have a career, yes... that is sarcasm. but really... if you want to pursue it... and you do well, you will make excellant money. any career is a good career if you believe in it and it's what you want to do with your life. it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. if you don't believe me, watch Rudolph the Reindeer and ask Herbie.

It's a great profession....for an adult who has been through high school, college and dental school.
Obviously as a 14 year old--you aren't ready to go into private practice. You may change your mind in the next few years. If you still want to be one when you are in college----then go for it.
