essentially they are a rapidly growing religious cult created by hack science fiction writer L .Ron Hubbard in the 1950's. It is a classic mind control cult.....aren't all religions?

The beliefs are essentially that millions of years ago, there was a galactic war, and the losers were thrown into a volcano on earth, but that their souls survived. These souls are called "'thetans", and they inhabit humans and are responsible for all manner of bad behaviours and psychological problems. Scientologists teach that you must "clear" yourself of these thetans in order to achieve a higher state, or something. They don't believe in psychiatry. They think that a giant lizard alien overlord called Xenu will come back someday.

Kind of weird, but they don't tell new converts all this at once. Newbies have to pay for courses and go through several levels before they are told the really weird stuff. Some estimate it may cost up to $400,000 to achieve the higher levels. So basically they are a bit of a religious pyramid scheme/scam.

They also are known to be VERY aggresive with people who say bad things about them (like former members who feel ripped off) They have a group of lawyers whose job is to make your life miserable with all kinds of dirty tricks, frivolous lawsuits, destroy your credit, spread rumours etc. There have also been several unexplained deaths of members.

They were very secretive for years, but there is now a lot of info on the web posted by former members. Google scientology/fraud/cult

Not a member of this church but have gone there with a friend and we went to the free library here in los angeles and at their celebrity center in Hollywood. You don't have to buy the books, tapes...you can sit and listen to them for free. I don't like the meetings they are always trying to get you to spend money on courses etc. I think Ron Hubbard has some useful things to say but if he were to come back from the dead I don't think he would like the way the church is today.
It's all about money now.

L. Ron Hubbard, the father of Scientology, was a science fiction writer. The whole of Scientology is based on his science fiction. They basically hold that mankind was planted here by beings from another planet.

They also believe that whatever we can imagine is possible, because those concepts are burned into our psyche from our alien past.

L.RonHubbard (Sci Fi author) the founding father of Scientology , ackowledges Jesus as a individual and a instructor, it rather is all. the religion/cult, would not understand him as a savior or God, or the Holy Trinity. they don't believe in heaven or hell only that they've a spirit that has lived dissimilar lifetimes and their God is a few Xenu diety from outerspace.

Scientology is a dangerous cult. Followers are required to 'audit' courses, which are increasingly expensive, to learn the higher tenants of the faith. "What they believe" is actually a secret of the highest order among them, but it has been exposed by victims fleeing the cult.

Spend some time reading up on it: http://www.xenu.net/
