"Your child is ready for more elaborate toys, but safety is a very real factor, for he is pulling himself to standing and about to become a biped. Almost every child will enjoy the following types of toy; they are safe and he will use them long enough to make the investment worthwhile."

take-apart toys such as Fisher-Price Classic Wooden Stacking Train

These are just a FEW suggestions. I found my one-year-old's favourite toys were an empty bottle to push, kick around the floor and a big empty box (from a dishwasher or whatever).

My nephew is turning 1 tomorrow and I got him bath toys for his birthday. He has an older brother so he doesn't need any clothes or toys(they have tons already!). I think bath toys are an often overlooked idea. There are lots of kids who have a fear of the bath and having toys to play with while in the bath makes the time much more enjoyable. The best are toys that let them scoop water and see it pour out. My daughter is almost 3 and she still loves these kind of bath toys.

Honestly, out of all the high-tech toys we got (and the grandparent's got) my daughter her 2 favorites were:
1) A $3 rubber duck from Walmart that she could play in the tub with, teeth on, and easily carry around
and
2) A big, rubber 4-square ball that bounces, is lightweight and very colorful. We paid $10 for it. She loves rolling it, watching it bounce and playing "catch" with mommy and daddy. It makes a pleasant "doing doing" sound when it bounces too, which is part of the fun.

I told my husband that for Christmas this year my vote is on 15 rubber ducks in a bag. Of course, we all know the bag will be the most interesting "toy" of them all. HAHA!

Any baby store should have a number of choices for you... There are cloth books, large plastic blocks, bath items. Make sure you don't get anything that can come apart and have small items that can then be put in the mouth. Children that age are human vacumn cleaners!

If it's a boy get him something to play in the dirt with. If it's a little girl get her something she can push around, like a learning table that turns into a walker. People nowadays are shoveling so much learning crap on little babies. Play is what they need. Play helps them to learn.
